Camera in Tokyo

I'm going to Tokyo at the end of this month, I would like to upgrade my point and shoot digital Lumix to a Panasonic Lumix DMC-G1 with the standard 14-45mm Lens. They are over priced from what I can see over here at around €699. I've seen them from a couple of English based sites between £385-415. Does anyone know of a site that shows average prices in Tokyo? Has anyone ever bought a camera over there? Any tips? Just wondering is it worth waiting until I get there if there is a bargain to be had.

    Thanks,

    Mark

I was over there last October and bought a bog standard digital camera for about €100 that I've seen over here being sold for €150+. I'm not very big into photography so wouldn't be very au fait with prices and specs of the upper end of the market. They have huge discount electronics stores in practically every district, with probably the best one being BIC CAMERA. The range of makes and models is phenomenal. We stayed about 5 mins from their flagship store in Ikebukuro and the place is about the size of Clerys in Dublin but there are 9 floors in the place.

They sell everything from desktop tripods to 3 litre bottles of whiskey and massage chairs to crossbows. There's also a district that specialises in electronics called Akihabara with a ridiculous amount of camera and laptop shops. The only problem I had there, and its the same in most of Japan, is that they don't have an awful lot of English, and unless they're pretty proficient, they choose to not talk to you rather than engage you and ask what you're after.

When you do approach them, they'll tell you to wait and then go find someone who can speak better english than them. I'd imagine if you were trying to enquire about the more technical aspects of a camera, this could prove to be a nightmare.

Here's a quick link i found. To convert yen to euros, multiply by .8 to get a rough estimate (i.e 10,000 yen = €80)

Yea Yodobashi and Bic are great, take a really large Dunnes Stores, fill it with camera stuff then multiply by 9 floors- that's a Bic/Yodobashi for you. Remember your passport and you'll get a big chunky discount :)
