City centre truck ban question

    I saw a three axle 40' trailer being driven within the banned zone this morning and was wondering if there is any way for the ordinary punter to know if the vehicle has a permit? Is there a list on a website or does the driver have to display something on the window? Can the driver be challenged (by me) to show a permit?

    I think the ban covers 5-axle trucks?

    Yep- vehicles of five axles or more, though any vehicle is entitled to apply for a permit.

    That is correct, anything under that can drive in the city centre. I get the impression that the OP is talking about a three-axle trailer, e.g. the cab would have a further two axles.

    And so it does, I was a bit vague in my post. What I saw this morning was a 3 axle trailer being pulled by a 2 axle cab.

    a three axle 40' trailer is a 5-axle vehicle when you include the tractor unit.

    some trucks get around it by jacking up one of the axels to lift one set of wheels off the road.

    I've absolutely no empirical evidence or data to back this up but it seems to me that the ban hasn't had that much of a difference. It did initially, but after a few weeks the numbers of HGVs seemed to creep back up and now it doesn't seem to be all that different to before the tunnel opening.

    either the ban is being ignored or there's a lot of permits being issued.

    Its definitely made a difference along the North Quays coming from the Point/Dublin Port. That used to be wedged with large trucks

    The six month review contradicts that, shows the vast majority of 5 axles were removed from the city. My own observation or feel would certainly back that up.

    There's a big difference cycling around the city since the ban came into effect. Fewer squished person incidents are also occuring. If you haven't noticed the difference I doubt you where cycling around town before the ban came into effect.

    I see one or two regularly which I guess is better than the 20+ one would meet on the quays before the ban.
    Personally I would like cameras at every section of the quays to police trucks, cars using the buslane, RLJ's. Etc.
    Points and an immediate cash fine would sort much of this out.
