Please advise on impacted wisdom tooth

Hi my partner has been in a lot of pain with his wisdom tooth the last few days. He hasnt been able to open his mouth fully and the whole side of his face is in pain. He went the dentist and it turns out he has a lower impacted wisdom tooth (and an infection).

I was just wondering if anyone has had any experience of any other procedures other than extraction? He's terrified to say the least of the dentist. Someone told me the dentist can cut/open the gum up to let the tooth come through itself but I don't know how true this is? Any advice welcome please!!
