penalty given..................for shouting!!!!!!!

Comments

  • Do you not agree with it? I think its a fine penalty to give.

If a kicker is taking a kick at goals, and the opposition come out shouting, the referee will re-award the penalty. Same applies to conversions.

It wasn't a kick at goal.

    Absurd penalty.

Brilliant. Well done ref and TJ.

Scarlets gave away a similar penalty against Ospreys over the Christmas. The penalty was taken again after a player shouted at Biggar while taking the kick. Different scenario but you'd think they'd learn their lesson.

Happened to me in a few years back versus Monivea. They had a defensive 5m scrum, ball went to the outhalf, i went "AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!" to distracted the lad clearing from behind his own touch line. As he fluffed it and i was about to touch the ball for a try the ref blew the whistle, awarded a reset scrum and told me "This is a gentleman's game" and that i'd be made to be "forcible substituted" off the pitch if i tried that again. I naturally in the bru-ha made a scene "stupid blah blah blah, ridiculous blah blah blah, etc!" and the ref instead gave them a penaty on their 22. Nonsense in play for that to be penalised.

I've done it many times but that was the only time i was penalised for it and this video has finally confirmed to me that it wasn't bologne. I considered ringing 'Mythbusters' for a while i was so baffled. haha.

Lucky you weren't binned for your dissent...

Silly penalty in the OP, I'd be interested to know if it was due to the laws or the spirit that the penalty was awarded...

Seems a bit OTT to me. Strange one to give seeing as his refereeing was absurdly one sided for the rest of the match(yes Justin I know he's part time and only human)

Note to self: Dont attempt to read an article in grey font with a bright red back ground :o

In my opinion it would depend what he was shouting.

If it was just an offputting Aaaaghhh type shout, they're professinals get on with it.
If it was some form of abuse then penalty would be justified.

Without hearing what he shouted I'm just confused.

I seen it a couple of times at underage rugby. The number 8 on my team liked to let off a battle roar when going into contact. He had to stop though because its a penalty offence.

    1. It could sound like the person has injured themselves badly thus distracting the referee.
    2. If an actual injury did occur the ref may just think its the same eajit shouting again.

That's how it was explained to us by the ref after the match anyhow.

You are not allowed the abuse the referee or other players in rugby. Its not like soccer in that respect and thank god for that. Of course you can attempt to bite them in the scrum and that seems to be acceptable so there are other ways to be a scumbag.

Sledging or slagging other players is something where you will get subjectivity between refs.

I remember once watching a senior game and the defensive scrum half kept shouting at the hooker throwing the ball in the entire game. The ref said nothing to him about it. I asked him about it after the game and he stood over saying nothing about it. This ref is very senior now.

I reffed a J2 game earlier this year. I heard one player refer to another as nacker when he was walking away from him.

I had a quiet, calm word with the player who said it and then penalised him.

I think the linesman thought the ball was in touch and put up his flag. The ball swerved back into play and he came out with this nonsense to cover his ass.

Silly penalty IMO. If it was an insult, then perhaps it might be more justified, but I'd still consider it overly fussy refereeing.

Nonsense. Don't mistake a ref not being able to see, or not having the experience to know what can go on in the front row (most don't) for it being acceptable.

I used to play hooker at schools level and had the same problem for a couple of years. Tell me, as a referee, what is the difference between your example and what carried on in that Scarlets-Ulster match? I remember it used to vex me but there was nothing I could do about it, in all my time playing there I can't remember the opposition getting penalised for the shouting.

On a side note I remember playing an away game down in Cork and getting awful abuse from the the supporters at the lineout. When making the call, the jeering would start. It didn't piss me off as i'd experienced it many times before but the turning point came when I felt some **** spit on the back of my head. I didn't turn around and made shapes to throw the ball into the lineout. When the ref turned his back I flung the ball over my head as hard as I could and lashed it off the face of one of the *****. I then shouted to the ref that they took the ball off me. He then blew his whistle and gave us a penalty, the opposition cried foul and the referee marched 10 yards up the pitch. A small victory

I think there is a distinct difference between simple sledging, and what happened in the ML game. In my opinion sledging takes place between plays when the players are chatting to one another and they might say something to make the other guy think, maybe take his mind off the game. But disruptive play like shouting at a guy when he's winding up for a kick etc. is not sledging. I think the linesman was right in penalising the player. It is unsportsmanlike. I'm only 25 but I am of the old-school train of thought that rugby is a gentlemans game.

Then again when the professionals do it and get away with it doesn't set a good example... eg Wales pack waving there arms and beckoning to the opposition hooker to throw it in, which again I think is unsportsmanlike. If the hooker is delaying the ref will penalise it, no need for that carry on. Im really about 70 at heart though...

As I said I think this is something there is variance between refs on. Some refs might feel like a bit of a twat for giving out to a player for slagging another player.

I remember once getting really sick of a team's back chat. Now I was only a rookie ref and was still learning the tricks of the trade. The next time I heard anything it was going to be a YC as I had already pinged them at least three times for back chat.

Then I made a call for something. One of them goes: "Ah Jesus, Ref". I gave that player a YC. He walked off the pitch shocked. His mates said to him, "what did you get that for?" He said, I said "Ah Jesus" to the ref. Then one of them said, "what's the ref? A Presbyterian or something?" And they all were cracking up.

I was actually laughing a bit myself and was going to say something very smart back to them, but like I said I was rookie at the time and just felt a bit of a twat.

This makes me laugh - the rugby code of ethics. A couple of years ago, during an Italian match, I got a dressing down, and a ban on this forum, for jokingly slagging off the Italians. But the gamesmanship on the pitch is ten times worse. Good old Quinny is a folk hero, but the guy would use almost any means to get an advantage.

I also play hooker and as such always get the 'throw it in straight' comments, not helped by the fact my throwing is the weakest part of my game. I generally never take any notice but I remember once we were playing a team, I'm not going to say which and one of their supporters got pretty aggressive in saying it, I don't really remember but my father said it to me after the game and at one point one of them said 'sure they're only a bunch of scumbags anyway.' (We were winning and it was towards the end of a cup game.)

Hate that kind of crap. I can take a bit of banter between the players during the match, nothing wrong with it, but when it starts getting abusive then it's time to draw the line. Though there are times between the players when it gets heated. No excuse for supporters though IMO.

Fair play to you, if someone spat on me I'd do the same, dirty *****.
