On up in Kerry on Saturday, Cork have a very strong team, although it looks like Aidan Walsh will be out injured. Forwards will be something like McLoughlin/ Collins/ O'Driscoll and inside Honohan/ Sheehan / Barry O'Driscoll -at least three future Cork seniors in that bunch, plus Keane, Jennings etc elsewhere. Should be Cork by a few.

Looking at the respective panels, Cork have to big favourites for this.

Even though Kerry v Cork games can sometimes be derby type affairs, I wouldn't be holding out too much hope.
While Kerry have some decent players, the squad definately wouldn't be a vintage one.

The Kerry U21 team to play Cork in The Cadburys Munster U21 championship Quarter Final is as follows:
    1. Tomas Mac an tSaoir An Ghaeltacht (Captain)
    2. Peter Crowley Laune Rangers
    3. Kieran O'Connor Listowel Emmetts
    4. Brian McGuire Listowel Emmetts
    5. Padráig O'Connor Legion
    6. Barry Shanahan Austin Stacks
    7. Jonathan Lyne Legion
    8. Johnny Buckley Dr. Crokes
    9. Colm Moriarty Dingle
    10.James O'Donoghue Legion
    11. Barry John Keane Kerins O'Rahillys
    12. Mikey Geaney Dingle
    13. Daithí Casey Dr. Crokes
    14. Barry John Walsh Kerins O'Rahillys
    15. Paul Geaney Dingle
    Subs:

    16. Brian Kelly Legion
    17. Patrick Curtain Moyvane
    18. Edmond Walsh Knocknagoshel
    19. Denis McElligott Austin Stacks
    20. Philip Galvin Ballymacelligott
    21. Paul O'Donoghue St. Mary's
    22. Seán Walsh Cromane
    23. Ian Somers Currow
    24. George O'Keefffe Rathmore

    Manager: John O'Kennedy
Selectors: Tom Prendergast (Keel) Liam Brosnan (Currow)
Trainer - Gary McGrath (Beaufort )

No Lorcan McLoughlin (possibly because of the Cork hurlers?) or Liam Jennings (presumebly he'll start if Aidan Walsh isn't fit).

    Cork Team:

    1. John Mellet (Carrigaline)
    2. Rory O'Sullivan (Argideen Rangers)
    3. Rory Buckley (Macroom)
    4. Ian Jones (Bishopstown)
    5. Martin Hickey (Carraig na bhFear)
    6. Aidan Walsh (Kanturk)
    7. J.P. Murphy (Ballincollig)
    8. Chris O'Donovan (Valley Rovers - Capt.)
    9. Eoin Keane (St. Finbarr's)
    10. Mark Collins (Castlehaven)
    11. Ciaran Sheehan (Eire Óg)
    12. Kevin O'Driscoll (Tadhg MacCarthaigh)
    13. Barry O'Driscoll (Nemo Rangers)
    14. Jason Sexton (St. Finbarr's)
    15. Paul Honohan (Bishopstown)

    16. Brian Walsh (St. Oliver Plunketts)
    17. Richard Dineen (St. Michaels)
    18. Liam Jennings (Ballincollig)
    19. Mark Cahalane (Castlehaven)
    20. Aidan O'Reilly (Nemo Rangers)
    21. Lorcan McLoughlin (Kanturk)
    22. John Beston (Mitchlestown)
    23. Eoin Buckley (St. Michaels)

FT 19 points to 1-8 for Kerry :D:D:D

    Bit of a shock result.

    Fair play to John Kennedy

Barry John Keane and Johnny Buckley immense apparently.

Can somebody tell me where abouts Legion is?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,492 ✭✭✭MementoMori

Legion is one of the three teams in Killarney parish - the other two being Dr.Crokes and Spa. Why do you ask?

I dunno just heard of it before, but never knew where it was exactly, im from limerick, not kerry, plus it was one of the clubs in the kerry team list
    thanks (:

Fair enough - Crokes would have overshadowed them a fair bit in Killarney over the last while, but they are coming back a bit and have some good young players.

Came on in the second half, could barely move apparently.

Congrats Kerry, still plenty of talent in that Cork team for the future however.

Easy to be wise after the event i suppose but cork were very lucky to win the all ireland last year and but for a last minute goal would not have won munster.colm o neills class made up for a lot of shortcomings in the forwards.other than sheehan the other forwards today who played last year are average at best.bit of a setback given all the talk of how good cork are at underage level.

big win for the kerryiers all the same.there was nothing exptected of them.

 Horse**** really. Honohan is a pretty poor player, a workhorse, but Sheehan, Collins and Barry O'Driscoll are all quality (two of those weren't actually playing regularly last year btw) so ****s knows what you are on about. Similarly, Sexton wasn't playing either last year, so talking about last years forwards being mediocre is pretty irrelevent to today.

First of all I stated that Sheehan is a top class forward and i know O'Driscoll didnt play in 2009 but collins, who i think played in the final last year, isnt that great in a player imo.honohan is poor as you say also.Kevin O'Driscoll is a decent midfielder as he showed last year but not a forward.I mentioned forwards who were mediocre last year that were playing today.without colm o neill and sheehan to a lesser extent the forward line had a few average players.again just my opinion.

all im saying is that maybe there was too much talk about how great they were last year and how they would repeat the trick once again.Kerry got caught down in cork with the same attitude.Cork were very lucky bar that performance against kerry last year.i also mentioned last years performance because its really the only way of judging the form of the sides and players going into this year.

Its a great help to have players underage the following year but at 21 level it does not make that great a difference unless everyone of those players are of similar talent.only aidan walsh and sheehan from last year stand out as gifted players with barry o driscoll as good as them thrown in.only tyrone retained their all ireland a few years ago with players like mcguigan, mcanallen, o neill, hughes, mulligan, mcconnell involved in the 2 years.

The 21 win in 2007 had been the culmination of 3/4 years work with kerrigan, cadogan, carey, goulding,o neill, lynch involved plus john hayes, paddy kelly, paul o flynn involved the year before.the win last year was a bit of a surprise.

most of that team are underage next year so all is not lost yet.

still though kerry were going fairly poor.they were not expected to be competetive at all.ye could have awoken a sleeping giant i fear.icon8.gif

Collins only played late in the season once McCarthy got injured, and was excellent when he did play. As I said, I don't really get comparing last year's attack to this year, they are quite different.

    A few points:

Down and Derry are very very strong Under-21 again this year. Cork/Kerry games tend to be unpredictable at underage over the last few years while Tipperary are very good at ambushing both. Long way to go for Kerry still really.

It doesn't really suprise that the Cork defense got cleaned out without Aidan Walsh, there isn't anyway there bar Aidan that would be pushing for places in the Cork inter-county squad.

I'm inclined to think that, with Barry O'Driscoll, Ciaran Sheehan, Mark Collins, Chris O'Donovan and Aidan Walsh Cork will get as much out of the team going forward then Kerry will with theres. Which is the important thing.

It was a surprising result as most people believed Cork would win with a few scores to spare. U21 is nearly as hard to call as minor these days. Cork came up against some very good teams last year and still won. I very much doubt Kerry will fair better than Cork did last year. Fair dues for winning today , but maybe today was their final.

Barry john Keane looks a great prospect very dangerous and Buckley dominated midfield.

Could be a blessing in disguise for Cork though, a few of those U21 players could get a run with the seniors for the remaining league games.
