iphone outgoing mail server problem

I've read through the related threads on boards but haven't been able to find a solution.

I've set up a mail account for an email account I have in tcd.

    I'm with vodafone.

I'm using IMAP. I have the incoming mail server address correct so can receive mail but can't send mail as the the outgoing mail server address is wrong.

    I also can't delete messages.

According to the tcd technicians who are very reliable I should be using the vodaphone outgoing mail server. Vodafone have told me it is 'mail.vodafone.ie'. I've also tried 'smtp.vodaone.ie' and 'imap.vodafone.ie' but neither of these work.

Everytime I call vodafone I get through to someone who hasn't got a notion what I'm talking about.

    Can anyone help?

You should check with the TCD guys that they are set up for it, but if they are, try using the TCD server but set the port to 587.

I use an iPhone and a laptop with various different ISPs (different Wi-Fi networks in different locations) so, to avoid having to change my SMTP server for 3 different email accounts, I use the email providers' (not ISPs') SMTP servers, with a username and password, and on port 587.

I have a same problem but in DIT, can receive mail using imap.dit.it or mymail.dit.ie but can't send mail, the setting i was given smtp.dit.it so you could try smtp.tcd.ie , but i think they will only let you send email if you are in TCD lan, outside Tcd or dit lan smtp is blocked, I have tried that within dit and that works so i don't exactly know what is problem.

Yes, if I'm not on wifi it works grand. Anyone know why this is? Would it be a deliberate ploy by Vodafone to force you to send via your data package?

Do you have a username and password entered for the SMTP server? Many phone companies make you authenticate to their SMTP server when you're sending from off their network (like when you're on Wifi) so that they can verify you are a customer.
