Derailleur Havoc!

So, my gears started to click and jump slightly, on the way home yesterday evening.
Then, going up a hill, disaster! The rear derailleur snapped off and went into the wheel. Had to carry the bike for a few hundred metres, find a place where I could abandon it, and then I picked it up later.

Not sure I understand what happened. I had some problems with my Shimano 6700 chain around 6 weeks ago, so I changed it.
But there's been no other sign that such a problem would happen.
The Derailleur (also Shimano 6700) has snapped, the dropout to the frame is also snapped.
Are Dropouts fairly standard? It's a Planet X - anyone know if a LBS would be able to replace this, or do I have to prostrate myself before Planet X?
Also - has anyone else had probs with Shimano 6700? Any other options re replacement? Are 6700 levers compatible with anything else?

That happened to me once before - I had neglected to set my rear derailleur's limit screws, so shifting into my largest tooth on the sprocket threw the chain and derailleur into the wheel. Cue broken mech and hangar. I'd check the limit is set correctly to prevent this in future.

I'm not sure, but I think that Shimano 105, Ultegra and Dura Ace are all compatible?

if the dropout's broken get one from planet x (they are designed to break in these circumstances)

they are usually held on with a couple of allen bolts

I never did check the limit screws - I need lessons in gears!
