The college news paper, The Campus Times, are currently looking for some feedback from all students on the newspaper. They have created a short survey which will hopefully give a clearer picture on how students feel about the paper. They wish to make it more student relevant and the results of this survey will go towards doing that.

Attached to this post is the survey - please, if you could complete and email it to:- thecampustimes@gmail.com. Or, if you like, post your answers here or over PM.

At the last Class Rep Council, some complaints were raised from both those supporting and those against the paper. There is an awful lot of people who simply have no clue how the paper has to run and why it is run in its current form. I think they may be covering this in the next edition due out on Tuesday, but I can probably answer any questions you have here anyway.

    Two I can think of:-
    1) The college paper is currently funded by WITSU. They pay for the print and design of the paper. The paper can not be self funded as one of the previous WITSU Team signed the paper into a lengthy deal with an advertising agency which The Campus Times or (afaik) WITSU make no money from. Therefore, The Campus Times can not go and seek money independently and rely on WITSU. This contract ends at the end of the year.

    2) The submission of news from Clubs & Societies is always a difficult one. A representative from the Motorsport Society complained at the meeting they have never been contacted to submit news into the paper this year. We have made numerous calls on Boards and within the paper for content submission whether it be just news in general or from societies/clubs.

We understand from speaking with Clubs & Socs, they have emailed all societies and clubs advising them to get in touch with us. We do not have contact details for each and every society and as you can expect, it would be rather time consuming to contact each and everyone. The paper is run by students.

Anyway - let us know your thoughts here or over PM and complete the survey (attached) if you can :)

    Thanks.

I hope the post won't be too long to put here, but here's my feedback:

    1. How familiar are you with the student newspaper, ‘The Campus Times’?

    • I read it on a regular basis

    2. Overall, how would you evaluate the Campus Times?

    • Poor

    3. In what type of format do you feel The Campus Times should be published?

    • Paper-print

    4. How often would you like to see the Campus Times published?

    • 2-3 times a month (Fortnightly)

    5. How likely are you to read the next issue of the Campus Times?

    • Somewhat Likely

    6. From the following subject choices, rank in order of preference (1, 2, 3, 4….);

    • Politics _3_
    • Sport _2_
    • Business _5_
    • Humour _4_
    • Cookery _6_
    • Student Union News _1_

    7. Do you believe that it is important that a college, such as WIT, should have a quality student newspaper?

    • Very important

    8. Are you currently satisfied with ‘The Campus Times’ as your student newspaper?

    • No _X_

Reasons for satisfaction or dissatisfaction (if any) -

The publication is very poorly produced, inconsistent in its style and sometimes downright uncomfortable to read due to the style of writing used. It’s a newspaper, not a chat down the pub with the lads! I’m not saying the journalistic standard has to be on par with The Irish Times, but a bit of proper language and grammar wouldn’t go astray. We’re meant to be third level students after all!

    9. How do you believe ‘The Campus Times’ could be improved?

The publication should really be presented a lot better and laid out properly. WIT has approx. 200 graphic design students, can they assist in the design of the publication? Have they been asked? If it looks swish, people will want to read it. The newspaper could be improved if it was presented in half size (not half the amount of pages, but on physically smaller sheets). The flow of the newspaper would run a lot smoother if this was the case. Also, get a proof-reader. If you already have one, fire him/her and get a new one!

Just saw that the paper has been pulled. New can of worms will be opened I'd imagine.

Aye, Students Union no longer want it printed (they funded it). Going that way for sometime now, probably didn't help with the article taking a pop shot at SU folk.

Journalism Society holding an emergency meeting on Monday @ 5.20pm in F30 - all are welcome. Will discuss the next course of action I guess.

Not a whole lot, just discussing the events leading up to this and listening to peoples views on the whole thing.
