    Was just out watching that nice red/blue flashing object in the sky (Venus or Sirius or something else ;-).

    I heard what sounded like a coot calling. I've heard it before. There are ditches and flooded land nearby but are they nocternal?

    Both Coot and Moorhen call at night. Thye are weird calls and hard to describe. Try a google on something like "Coot Moorhen Night call".
