I am taking some photos on a trip to an Animal Welfare Sanctuary on Thursday. From the pictures I take, I hope to create a collage of the better photos. I have access to Photoshop and am just wondering if this is possible.

    Thanks in advance,
    Jackobyte.

Sure it is. A good project for you to get to know photoshop too.

Do you know any good tutorials or will I just search around on the web for a bit?

Well naturally I've no idea what level you're on with photoshop, I'm going with Novice if that's ok.

So first thing you'll decide in your head is the size of the end print. Let's say 19" by 13".

From that you'll create the Canvas with the traditional computery File/New and set the file size to 19" by 13" with a resolution of 300dpi. As soon as you create the canvas you can save it as say "AnimalCollage2010.psd"

Then I'd open up a few of the images and rework them as I liked. Then I'd drag them onto my AnimalCollage, move them around, resize them etc.

    Save as you go along.

Now what you need to do is look for a few tutorials on "Layers" and "Masking".

When you're finally done playing and you want you print it you "SAVE AS " .jpeg file.

That should keep you busy for a little while :0)

I am a relative novice to PS but have previously used other photo editing software. I know how to move the images around and transform them. It is the blending together smoothly part of the process that I'd struggle with.

    Thanks for the help BTW.

Here is how it looks. The pictures themselves aren't the best as the layout of the sanctuary was different that I expected. Happy enough though.

Hey that's not bad for a first attempt.

Did you use layers and mask off what you don't want? <- That's very important work flow for making modifications.

You can also play with the bg. Use a gradient or some other relevent image, perhaps the chippings used for bedding?

Well done. I like collages and this is a good opener :0)

I just used the lasoo selection tool on the original images with a 70 pixel feather effect, outlining what I wanted to carry over to collage. CTRL + C to copy. Over to a collage background and CTRL + V to paste. CTRL + T to open free transform and resized and placed where I wanted.

Each picture and the text were on different layers and I used eraser with a low hardness around the edges of the pictures where you could see the frame edge. Frame is still evident in places of the "Do not feed the donkeys" picture and the one above it. Will fix that later.
