HI just wondering if there are any irish or history teachers out there.

    Do you like your job?
What are the good and bad points?
How would I go about becoming a teacher in irish and history , what colleges etc.?
Are the employment prospects good and are ye leading a fairly happy life as far as salary is concerned?

    All replies welcome!! :)

Irish teacher. Love the job but not the politics or the perception other people have of teachers, not that that really matters. Money ok but I do lots of other work during the Summer to supplement it. History not as popular as you may believe but with Irish in your degree highly employable.

Your best bet is an Arts/Humanities degree in Irish and History, followed by the PGDE (Post-Graduate Diploma in Education).

As gaeilge said, a degree in Irish makes you very employable. However, History is not compulsory in every school. The days of walking into a permanent job are gone and we have suffered cutbacks in the last while, but hopefully the situation will be better by the time you finish college.

    History teacher here.

Love my job, though I am mostly teaching History at a resource level rather than to a whole class. I am teaching the subject I adored in school so I am very happy

Good points are as I pointed out above, and also the fact that pretty mich every student that does History after Junior Cert is there because they want to be and they want to get the best from the subject. It is a joy to teach these students.
Bad point, Leaving Cert exam requires a hell of a lot of stamina and there is so so much to get covered with the pupils.
