leaving the bike out at night

    i know this sounds like a troll question but is there any harm in leaving a bike out over night if its going to drop below 0?!?! its supposed to be about -2/-3 here over the next couple of nights and i'm just after getting a brand new mountain bike and don't want to anything to damage it if thats what the freezing might do!! is the worst that could happen is getting cold balls from the saddle?! :D

    well if it's new, i'm sure it has a quick release saddle. take that indoors with you!

    Temperature isn't an issue. Dampness is - your chain and bolts (and any other steel parts) will rust if you leave your bike outside regularly - unless you're very diligent about maintenance.

    Some suggestion that you might have problems if there's a prolonged spell of VERY cold weather (-7C and below), according to these threads from the recent cold snap:

    But -1 or -2 shouldn't be bad, except for the reasons already mentioned (damp etc.).

    When i commute when working night shifts i have to leave my road bike out at night often it would of dropped well below freezing the bike would be almost completely frozen at 6:30am when im about to head home. Only things to watch and check more regular would be inspect your chain headset and remove your axels just make sure these are dry when your going to pack your bike away.
