Fiesta 1.25 impressions

Got to test a 1.25 Fiesta today. Did plenty of reading first, various tests, all of which paint a very rosy picture of the car and the engine. I had pretty high expectations. Have to say I was pretty disappointed, the engine was smooth but felt pretty gutless, the ride was nothing special, the refinement while OK was nowhere near the journo comments of being 'A class above'. I drive the class above and it fell well short. The equipment level on the Titanium is still pretty mean, wind up rear windows. I love the looks and style of the car, but it didn't really seem outstanding in any area.

The 1.25 likes to be revved and comes alive around 3k rpm or so.

I think they're great, but I suppose it depends on what you are comparing them too.

Isn't there two versions of the 1.25 litre? A 65bhp and 82bhp version?

I drove the Fiesta for a few miles and was generally impressed but didn't push it to test the refinement or ride etc. You are correct about the relentless hyping of Ford products in the UK motoring press (and by certain posters in this forum :D)) Funny how every new Ford since about 1993 is a "quantum leap" with "ultra dynamic handling and composed ride" blah blah blah.

In particular I have found the ride and refinement of many Fords to be lacking. Yet the magazines say that they have great ride and refinement.

For example check out the What Car? comments on the ride of the Ford Mondeo, Volvo S80, Renault Laguna and Citroen C6.

Now that's not to say that Fords aren't good cars, they are. I'd say the most overhyped Ford was the Focus Mk2.

It was the 82bhp version and no I didn't cane it, I'm used to a Focus diesel so not used to revving. Maybe it's a 'grower'. This car would be a replacement for an old 97 Pug 106, and while of course better in every respect just did not seem to be as far ahead as I expected, and nowhere near the hype.

2 things based on personal experience.

1/. 82bhp 1.25 engine needs to be kept up in the rev range to perform. It's the smallest capacity unit in the range after all. The new car is bigger but still lighter than it's predecessor.

2/. Tyre pressures have a significant effect on the ride comfort. My new one came with 45psi in the tyres. After these were adjusted to the recommeded levels the ride comfort improved dramatically.

I've been driving diesels for years and my wife has the 1.25 Fiesta. I always thought the Fiesta was dead because I didn't rev it being used to the diesels. It really comes alive in the higher rev range....surprisingly so.
