Just wondering are there any History students who can tell me what happens if you hand up a third year dissertation that doesn't make the grade. I presume you just have to write another one over the summer and hand it up some time in August?

Not that I'm expecting this to happen to me or anything....

To be fair, if you hand up a dissertation that isn't a 2.1 or 1.1, you've wasted 3 years of your life. You've enough time to gather sources, and then write the thing, so unless you are lacking hands, you should'nt be thinking about getting a bad mark in it at this stage.

EDIT: That sounds really harsh, I don't mean offence! :)

Hi, Former Sociology student here. We also had a final year research project. I think the history one was 8,000 words?
Anywho if you fail the dissertation, you will repeat it in the Summer (as you would any module) and be warned - you will not graduate in September.

    Good Luck!

How long would you have to wait until you did graduate, if you don't mind me asking?

    I think it is December...

They definitely don't tell you this!

When is your dissertation due? You should still have time to put the work in and don't think about repeating. Keep positive! :)

I have to hand it up Thursday week, and I only have about 1000 words done. I'm not familiar with the process of repeating, and this evil giant of a dissertation looming on the horizon just shook my confidence, but you're right, thinking about failing won't help me get the job done.

Thanks for the info again, I really appreciate it! :D

Ok so between now and then work your absolute ASS off.
You can still do it,there IS TIME. Tough but you can do it to pass anyway... Day and night and you'll graduate next September ;)

Believe it or not, you have enough time to do it. Just put your head down, get a crate of Red Bull, and sleep for a max of 5 hours a day and you will do it no problem!! Out of interest, who is your supervisor?? I thought they were handed in the start of April last year...

My Advice on your situation is to chill out and think about how all the rest of the work you've done and your existing knowledge relates to your dissertation.

This was my situation and i wrote the majority of mine in an 18 hour sit in, finishing at seven in the morning and running down to get it bound and submitted that day. I was in a right panic, but once i actually committed to spending a significant amount of time at it, you realise how much you've actually taken in (provided you've been going to class ;))

8,000 (or is it 10,000- i did history and sociology, cant remember which was which) isnt actually a huge amount. Detail wise its a long essay, rather than a short thesis. Marking wise this is the case also.

Best not to repeat, as it'll ruin your summer, and be a point of annoyance for years to come.

Are you sure it's due in next Thursday? I'm doing history too and it's only the draft that's due in next week, my supervisor said one or two chapters is enough to have done for it. The full thing isn't due in til the end of April.
