What kind of neck problem? I'm reluctant to joke about it if he's on the way out.. the only thing worse than a politician is being haunted by their ghost

It's a deteriorating back condition arising out of his involvement in a serious car accident some years ago.

The terms "rats" and "sinking ship" keep coming into my mind.

Not saying all politicians are rats, I haven't been a member here long enough to be THAT cynical, just... it keeps coming into my mind. Is all.

Neck problem me arse, did you see him on the news walking with a cane ? He didn't have that toy out a few weeks ago.

Fact of the matter is Cullen was due to be dropped at the next reshuffle as he has long been considered a liability to the party. He himself also wanted to go but not because of a neck problem- it's because under statute of limitations he only has about 18 months left to sue the Indo/Evening Herald for libel for the same reasons Monica Leech did. Now Cullen's no thicko and he realises that fighting a 2012 election whilst having a High Court libel case running at the same time just don't match.

So he is basically retiring so he can bring a libel case against IN&M. Now Monica Leech got a payout of 1.9 million just a short while back on the same claim- as Cullen is way more well known than her you can expect a record payout in the Four Courts of somewhere north of 3 million for dear old Martin. That, coupled with his 140,000 severance pay and an annual ministerial pension of 100k should see him right for retirement indeed.

This country just beggar's belief. He's a bumbling idiot who never did a clever days work in his life yet he will be retiring with millions in the bank

I presume he can now concentrate his time in taking the state for another half a million by suing RTE for the hurt they caused him and his family a couple of years ago. So between Pensions and everything else the state will provide a plenty for another Loyal FF family for many years to come.

To be honest, as long as the incompetent ****ehawk Mary Coughlan is still in government, it doesn't matter who resigns. She's got to be the most embarrassing TD in the history of the state. Ah feic it. They're all embarrassing.

I met him in New York this time last year, his back certainly hadn't deteriorated at the time. He was staying the same hotel as I was, had a chaffeur driven car bringing him to the airport (and presumably picking him up from there too), spent a lot of the weekend in the bar of the hotel or smoking outside. His reason for being in New York? When I asked him he informed me the NY Yankees were opening their stadium, which meant Minister Cullen had to be there for opening day. Tickets were costing thousands of dollars. Minister Cullen also attended on the second and third days of the stadium being open. The complete and utter pr!ck.

i can't help but laugh at this sissy, he has a pain in his neck and retires, whereas brian lenihan is still working despite having pancreatic cancer, which will kill him.

By all accounts Cullen is now in intense physiotherapy just so he can walk around.
I have no doubt that it will die down once he gets therapy and stays off his feet, but he needs to be able to rest, and he can't do that in the Dail.
I wouldn't call it anything as simple as a pain in the neck.

Probably for the best that he's gone though.

    Let me see...

    * I've worked as a TD for nearly all my life, worked in government office for decades, worked for my community for the same time, my family and friends know me and my reputation.
    * I suspect that I'm about to be given the boot from my current office and replaced. I'm getting on in age, have stacked up the pensions and benefits. I will get a pay-off in the hundreds of thousands lump sum too.
    * I want my record to show that I gave up public role myself as to close such a record as being seen to be "fired" will not aid my reputation, status and family history record.
    * I have ill-health. I wonder can I use that reason to excuse myself from the present government predicament and save face?

    I wonder...

Yeah I know mate- I wish it was cynical myself but sadly it's not.

His statement in January that his treatment in the media was like 'waking up every day and being raped'. was indicitive of his libel plans- no-one would claim that he didn't get a rough ride by the media but using the word rape?

That statement was a marker to the media over what is to come shortly. And seeing as Monica Leech has already won her libel case for the exact same allegations then the media better arrive at Cullen's libel case with large blank chequebook. He's going to have one hell of a pay day on this one.

Ironic to think that a FF person resigns over a matter that potentially shows they have a back bone, even if it is a fecked up one.:pac::pac:

many the poor fecker suffering a back injury from a car accident have been told it is all in your mind, i bet he has not heard that.
