VW Passat Gear Stick Gaiter

I am looking for directions for changing my worn gaiter around my gear stick on a VW 01 passat. I have looked up the net with conflicting directions. I bought a gaiter off ebay, but recieved nothing else. Do I need any more parts? Does the top of the gear stick screw off, or just pop off?

The top of the gear stick should be held on by a crimped brass band,you can cut this off and replace with same or a jubilee clip or even cable tie.

To get at it you unclip the gaiter from around the base and pull it up over the gearknob,put a cloth over the base of the gear knob when cutting it off to stop any pieces falling down into the selector.
