I hear gold bar tape is where it's at.

Hipsters don't use funky saddles. They use either a Brooks, a Selle San Marco, or a Charge Spoon, depending what colour they want. If you want to be an ultra hipster get risers and Oury grips, hipsters don't use drops as if they go too fast they'll ruin their hair. You'll get different coloured tapes in any shop though. Decals, just don't. Check out LFGSS, loadsa hipster tips there.

    P.S. Don't get an Aerospoke.

Gold tape? On drop bars? Wow... that's embarrassing. The hipster community shunned tape years ago, and non track drops are so the ghey. If gold is your thang then anodising ftw.

    Down then up:

The cool is proportional to narrowness of your bars so get out that hacksaw.

So gold eh?? It just seems like a lot of, well, pressure. I was going to go pink...it seems a bit more like 'ooooh I'm a big girl, I was too busy picking out my saddle to do any training'

    ....and then bam! :D

Don't bling it out. Will look a bit silly with a black frame. If you 'bling' a bike cheaply, it'll look awful, and it's very expensive to 'bling' a bike out properly. I'd say get some deep section rims, if you can afford them, Velocity B43 or HPlusSons. Get whatever colour you want, and then match your griptape to that, and your saddle too if you want. I wouldn't bother with decals or random coloured griptape. First thing I'd change is handlebars, very cheap to change, and drops are impractical for urban riding.

Is this bike actually for you to race the track?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,505 ✭✭✭✭DirkVoodoo

Pink bartape, chain and tyres maybe? Probably the cheapest place to start. I think black and pink would look pretty good and should the old boards jersey redesign go ahead after all this time, you would have kit to match :)

Nice bike by the way...keep the drops.

Why? I find most people don't actually use drops on the road, and end up just using the brake hoods (which that Dolan doesn't have), so unless you're racing, you're left with no comfortable position, especially without hoods. My langster came without hoods, so I changed to a pursuit bar, and I'm looking forward to trying it out. Already feels a lot more comfortable.

Well, I'm almost certain she is using it on the track, where drops are required.

I have drops on my commuter and use them quite a bit on any of the downhill sections, I don't really find comfort an issue. I saw your bike alright, looks pretty good.

Well if she's using it on a track that's fine, clearly.

Thanks, you've a pic of your around somewhere?

White bartape and saddle is the easy option for making that frame look good. If you're thinking pink, perhaps this and this, although you might try shopping around to find a better deal on shipping. Unfortunately, Selle San Marco don't make the pink ones any more so you can't buy direct from them.

I think I'd go Orwell colours

    Yellow Selle Italia Lady Saddle
    Green Tape

And a stiker with your name on it on the top tube 'Godihatethehillsbuticankickyoursarseonthetrackyouwillcryforyourmother'

Or aggressive red saddle and tape Grrrr!!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,995 ✭✭✭✭blorg

The bike looks great as it is, I would be with Tonto on the white bar tape and saddle as being the best idea for it.

I'd have to go with all Electrogrimey's pics being hideous, this one being the sole exception:

    dolan_kadet2.jpg

    E.g. left pretty much alone.

It's a nice bike, don't go ruining it.

The Navigator Pista wheels are decent as is so no particular need to change them. Obviously a rear disc would be nice, but maybe not the cheapest piece of bling.

Point taken. But I think it's gonna need a little bit of 'personality'....even if it's just to show I haven't nicked it from the Dublin City Council.

Unfortunately the white bar tape & saddle combo seems to be pretty well represented down at the track already, as is pink. I'm liking some of the suggestions from the french jury....Orwell colours or a bit of angry red....

And yes, it is for the track. I don't know about kicking anyone's asses, but god I love the way there's no hills :)

Samuel Sánchez wears a gold helmet and has gold bar tape because he won the Olympic road race. You will have to consult the euro rules to verify if he has exclusive rights to the colour. You don't want to look silly

That one is nice but replacing the wheels would be a bit expensive and the Navigator Pistas on it already are probably better for racing than hipster combo... TBH if you were replacing the wheels and aren't going to be riding it on the road the PX carbon tubulars ;400 would be a tempting option.

    PX50track600.jpg

Your best bet may be some sort of saddle/bar tape combo in whatever colour.

BTW just to clarify I found those pics mostly distasteful, electrogrimey's own steel Langster looks very nice and tasteful.

  • Moderators, Politics Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 24,269 Mod ✭✭✭✭Chips Lovell

I'm deeply suspicious of rims whose sole selling point is their colour, as seems to be the case with a lot of these fixed gear jobs. That's a screaming deal on those Planet X track wheels, but as you say, those Navigators are more than enough. Was considering them (the Navigators) for my own track bike before I went for the Mavics.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 378 ✭✭Greyspoke

Best keep it subtle I think especially with the (matt?) black frame. It already has strong white decals so go for one more colour and look at all the cmponents that you can change/change the colour of for the least cost such as bars/tape, stem, saddle, post pedals, tyres.
...and don't forget to post a pic of the finished work of art!

I've seen some "interesting" uses of drop bars in my time, but that has to be a pisstake, right?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,995 ✭✭✭✭blorg

If they had the courage of their convictions that is an impressive modification (saw the fork and front wheel before the bars.)
