Travelling to France for wedding wine

    Hi,
I'm contemplating the idea of travelling to France for the wine for our wedding in July. I know absolutely nothing about wine, so i'm hoping to bring a friend to advise me.
Just wondering has anybody got their wine in France. The ferry is costing about 300 euro. We need around 100 bottles, and then there's champagne and probably some beer while we are there. Would i be saving money travelling or would i be better off buying here?

    i'd appreciate any advice,
    Thanks

You'll have no trouble in saving €3 per bottle so you should at least break even

Hi, I did it for a friend of mine last year i saved him close to 2k and that was only on champagne and don't worry about customs they are just worried weather you have contraband cigarettes or not, just tell them that its for your wedding and you will have no problem.

you should check out sainsburys web site they have a calais wine part and from what I gather you place your order and the wines are picked and ready for collection

Wouldn't you get it as cheap in Newry?

As plenty here have suggested, you'll most likely do just as well up North. A friend of mine got all wine in Sainsburys - £10 for 3 bottles of Wolfblass.

You best check with your hotel how much corkage the charge also. You might find that it could actually work out cheaper for you to take the house wine from the hotel rather than taking in your own and paying corkage. I think our hotel is charging about €4 or €5 per guest for their house wine - assuming a half bottle per guest. A lot of hotels might be very keen to get rid of their own wine, just a thought..

if you bought 100 bottles of wine for £3 in Sainsburys - thats £300. Therefore you would save lots of money, it would be less hassle, you wouldnt have to hire a van to take all the wine back with you, no fee for the ferry..?? Seems like a no brainer. Even when you convert it to euro - your still saving a heap of money...!!! Drive up to Newry and save yourself a load on money and time...!!

We needed about 60 bottles wine and 40 bottles sparkling for our wedding. We thought about France but the cost of the ferry was prohibitive and we'd have to take a few days off work. We got married last month so it wasn't as if we could've used the opportunity to take a holiday in France.

In the end we got a fantastic bargain on cava in M&S, I think they were around €6 a bottle. We got our wine from Superquinn for €7 a bottle.

We probably should've gone to Newry and had a look for wine there as it is ridiculously cheap but we wanted French wine and Superquinn had a good deal on at the time.

Keep an eye out in the supermarkets for bargains; they usually sell on a sale or return basis. M&S are great for bargains so watch them too. The cava was delicious and would definitely recommend it. Take a trip to Newry too and see what bargains Sainsburys have on.

BTW, we got 40 bottles of cava for 120 (based on guest list), 100 accepted, 90 turned up and we're left with lots of bottles. The same thing happened with the wine.

Yes you'll make a killing - only a £3 bottle of wine in Sainsbury's will be rot. In France it would be pretty decent
