Paying For a Car By Paypal

We advertised my father's car on Carzone. A guy has come back and offered to buy it without even looking at it. He wants to pay using Paypal and to arrange for a pick it up when the payment is made.

I was wondering how often people pay for cars using Paypal and what precautions are normally taken.

    Thanks,

I'd insist on a postal order. Do not accept any payments on paypal.

I know a fella who did this and the situation was very similar, no viewing a bank transfer and they said the car would be collected. he got the money but later had to pay it back and his bank at the time closed his account and told him never to come back. So be warned, try and use some common sense would you buy a car without even seeing it? usually when something sounds to good to be true It Usually Is.

Walk away, don't give them any details. If they were serious about buying they would come and view the car.

Let him pay and then when he comes to get it give him a headbutt for trying to scam you!

VERY suspicious!Unless its a real cheap car (on Carzone!) and he lives locally and can provide a local phone number to contact him at Id run a mile .Apparently they can claim non receipt of goods and get their money repaid by Paypal and YOU are at the loss.

This comes up from time to time. There are a few safety checks which can be done and it is safe, but the seller pays the commission which is huge with paypal.

why not...make a simple contract that him/she so and so recieved the car on that date in full working condition...the buyer was happy with the car therefore he took it etc...once you got him to sign it and he takes the car email it to paypal and say that the deal was sealed

Thanks for the quick replies guys.

Myself & my bro are trying to sell for our dad but there were several issues with this, guy says he is on offshore rig, can only pay by Paypal etc. Certainly didnt feel right.

No one buys a car without looking at it.

How can you not know this is a scam?

Must be a pretty nice car you are selling because the money to be made on offshore rigs is very good (danger money)

People do buy vehicles without seeing them, thats a part of my business :p

However the paypal issue is more than likely a scam.

Search the gumtree.ie forums and you'll see more about how the scam is intended to go.

    HTH ;)

The offshore rig thing is a scam. If you ever get paid this way, transfer the money out of PP to your bank and wait a few days. PP offer buyer protection now outside of eBay, but I dont think this covers cars (they are treated differently for obvious reasons).

Ask him to transfer the money into your account instead, see what he says.

TBH we were fairly certain it was a bit of a scam but didnt really know how it would work out and I was also interested in other peoples' perspective.
