Physio or Doctor

    Hi all,

    Not discussing a medical issue but wondering if i have a problem with shin splint "like" symptoms should i go to a physio to my GP who is qualified in sports injuries.

    OR should i just go and get gait done and a new pair of runners...........

    Answers on a postcard !

    I always try to advise go to someone who has either a background with running or experience in dealing with runners so hope that gives you a bit of a guide of which one to go towards

    I'm looking up someone else in my area so i can ring and ask them how soon i can see them. Marathon in June and don't want to miss to much training or know if my training is over for a while:(

    gait analysis is rarely a bad idea but for a current set of symptoms. I usually start with the Physio. If they can readily identify the problem then they're going to be the best person to treat it imo. If they seem a bit clueless as to what the problem is then I would go to the GP second. I'm sure though, you'll get as many "right" answers to this query as there are combinations of possibilities.

    Well i can see my GP as soon at 8am in the morning so i'm going with that and we'll see from that.

    I am thinnking of Gait tomorrow evening ( i'll see what he says ). With a small training window i need to get it sorted asap.........or at all.

    I'd be inclined to go for the physio first myself. Although the last time I had the same question and ended up with a physio, they correctly diagnosed the problem but due to some daft rules I still had to pay to get a GP's signature on a bit of paper so that the physio could get the xray that they wanted done.

    If the GP offers you some antibiotics or says anything like querying what on earth you'd want to be running that far for then I'd be asking for my money back. ;)

    Well back from the doctor and a lovely x ray.

    Waiting on results and he thinks its either a stress fracture or compartment syndrom.

    I'll know more in a few days when the x ray results come back.

    Either way it looks like i'm out for a few weeks and the June marathon is slipping away..........:(

    There are ways to train without putting any weight on the injury. I tore my calf three weeks before half marathon and still manage to train right up until the race.
    Aqua jogging
    using a flotation device to allow you to run with no impact.
    Cycling
    to replace some of your easier runs not a substitute but it will keep up your fitness
    Eliptical Machine
    Really similar movements to running without the impact

    Between three of these you will be able to maintain yourself until you are ready to run again

    thanks for that,

    i have the bike ready and am heading out tomorrow evening. I intend to keep my fitness levels up until i can get back out.

    the Eliptical Machine is one i think i'll take a trip to the local gym to use and maybe have a trip to the sauna:D

    Ok i got my x ray results back and it was only a back case of brusing so i can start to train again.

    I'm not doing cork and am going to focus on Longford now.

    I've ordered a decent bike through the cycle to work scheme and am going to replace 1 running session with 2 cycles. Build slowly and i'll be in a better position when the 18 week point comes compared to Feb.
