It depends really, if your going to keep the car until it'll be an old car say 9 or 10 years it wouldn't make too much of a difference as it would be depreciated by then. However if your going to keep it for only 2-3 years, then I would be inclined to hold back for an 08.

I presume the road tax changes in 2008 are a factor.

Given that the difference in tax would be about €2.5k over 5 years between an 07 and an 08, not to mention residual value concerns, I'd say the OP is dead right to be thinking about this.

Yeh normally the reg of a car would be of no importance to me, its 07 to 08 theres can be a significant differance on cost of tax, and ive a feeling as the value of 08 cars decreases and more and more people become aware of the saving they can make on taxes on an 08 car ive a sneaky suspicion that it could be very hard to get rid off a 07 car without without its being basically worthless.

Or maybe I could be wrong?

Also the money id save or other people would save on buying 08 compared to 07 will have to be made up paying the differance in tax.

I am in the same predicament now, going to get an Accord. July 08 the new tax system kicked in. Not sure of the fee but it's prob a lot less than 06/07 models where your looking at 614 notes a year. The 08's are a nice chunk of change though. Anyone know the tax on a 2.0 08 petrol Accord?

yeh i was wondering the same thing i know the 2.2 diesel is 302 for the year 08 and onwards, petrol could be dearer or cheaper if anyone knows itd be a great help.

Thing is whatever the tax of 08 Accord, you'd be doing well to get one for 21k. Not committing to that kind of outlay. 07 for 15/16k, 06 for 10/12. Roughly guessing now. I usually keep cars for 4 years or so and resale value seldom is a priority. Quick math 08 tax x4 v 614x4, the difference is less than the gulf in purchase price. Its a pickle but ultimaltey I reckon I will have to go with 06/07 even though I do accept I will have trouble giving it away when I am done. Anyone care to advise further, am I thinking clearly!!

IMO the 07 car would need to be cheaper by say 4 to 5k due to being a year older plus the tax difference yearly multiplied by the life left in the car, say about 15 years.

    So 5k due to being older & 15(€823-302) = 12,800

So if the 07 was about 13k cheaper, Id go for it.

Sorry if I implied otherwise, OP. It's just the majority of the Irish public are like that.

On an 08 v 06 the gap could be up to that figure alright. If I found a high spec one, I'd say a bag of cash with 13k init would secure it.

For anyone interested the Co2 on the 2.0 litre petrol Accord is 189g per km. The tax on a 08 Accord 2.0 litre petrol is €630 under the new Co2 system as opposed to €614 under the old engine size system. Nothing in it really, however as the diesel Accord goes from almost €800 down to €302 under the new system a 08 petrol model should cost considerably less than a similar diesel model.
