New job - P45

    Hi all,

I am starting a new job in the next two weeks. I have given my notice into my current job letting them know that I am leaving etc.

I am starting the new job on the 22nd of March, which means I will not finish up until the 19th of March in my current position. However, because my current company does not process payroll until the 5th of the month, it seems as if I will not have my p45 when I start my new job.

Does this mean I will have to undergo Emergency tax and is there any way of avoiding this until I get my p45.

Also, can I request to get my P45 before I leave my current job i.e can they give me this before they give me my last cheque?

    Thanks

you can't get your P45 until your last wage payment has been processed and you are officially finished work.
However, you do not need your P45 for your new job, it just makes it handier.
What you need to do is, as soon as you start in your new job, ask them for their PAYE registration number. Then ring your local tax office tell them you have changed jobs, give them this number, your PPS no and the date you started in your new job. They will then send you and your new employer a new tax cert. Your new employer will then be able to tax you correctly, and you provided you do this before the process your pay run you should not have to pay emergency tax.

Once you do get your P45 send it into your employer also, but it is not vital.
