When are the Irish films "Michael Collins" and "The Field" coming out on Blu Ray?
The only version of Michael Collins available for the last 12 years on DVD was the double sided disk version. Compression techniques have improved in the last 12 years and still this is the one on the shelves.
As for "The Field", the DVD version looks like it was mastered from a 4:3 VHS master. It looks absolutely dreadful. No widescreen version to date.

I think If the best they can do for The Field is a 4:3 VHS master transfer you will be waiting for the Blu Ray.:o I was given The Field DVD as a Christmas present about 5 years ago and you are correct, the quality is terrible and 4:3. Does Jim Sheridan have any pride in his old movies?
What is it with Irish movies in general?
I bought The Snapper last year and it is also 4:3 and looks like it was taped off the television.

Hope they do come out on blur-ray. 2 of my favorite Irish movies.

The play of the field was much much better though IMO.

If he had any pride in any of his work he would never have made Get Rich or Die Tryin or Brothers. Hell he's a film of the week director at best.

The reason neither film has been put on Blu Ray is that the demand is simply not there. The cost of remastering the source material is far too much to justify the expense.

I remember going to see The Snapper in the Cinema around 1990 and even then it looked like it was taped off the television.

The Wind That Shakes The Barley hasn't been released either yet even though the other Ken Loach film "Looking For Eric" came out very fast on BluRay.

I suppose a lot of Man United fans would snap that one up. It's only a tenner on Play.com.

Though the movie is an enjoyable history 'romp', (see Dev in drag), I'd love to see them do a good job with the Michael Collins Blu-Ray.

Chris Menge's cinematography was brilliant in that film!
