    What are the difference (if any) between lets say bog standard STI cables which seem to work with my Veloce levers pretty ok and Campy/Shimano 'branded' cables?.
    Also between MTB and Road cables. Is the inner (inside) end different.

    I routinely use Shimano XTR and Deore cables on my road bikes. They are basically Dura Ace and 105 respectively. I can tell no difference in anything except packaging.

    Non branded cables are something I try to avoid. I find the cheapo no-namers can stick a lot easier giving you rubbing brakes and crap shifting. Braking is less of a problem, but certainely for a rear derailleur in particular I favour a good brand with a high quality outer cable. Experience of taking shortcuts in this regard have proven to be a false ecomony because I have to replace crap cables a lot quicker, sometimes after one ride when I realise they are rubbish and also have to get new bar tape. Buy quality, buy once as they say, buy crap, buy twice.

    Alligator are another brand of inner cable which are very good .....
    Also on the last bike I built I use a set of Jagwire cables which are super as they include all the bits and you can get the outers in different colours... cos Shimano outer only come in black !!
