Clackety noise on Corsa B

Bit of strange one - maybe someone can help out. Was doing a service on the missus' corsa (oil, plugs, filters) - anyway once finished, I took the car for a short drive with the window open. Between 1k and 2K revs I can hear a clackety noise - only happens for a moment and is fine after. Dont hear it at idle or above 2K revs. Its a little intermittent when it happens - i.e. sometime there is no noise, some times 3 or 4 clacketys, sometime just one.
I was thinking maybe loose timing chain ? but Im guessing that would be evident at idle.

    Any suggestions ?

Was it there before the service?

Are you missing any tools? :o

:D Now that you mention it.......

Im not sure if the noise was there before, you can only hear it with the window open - the car hasnt been driven much in the last year and this is prob the first time the weather has been good enough to open the window.

Is it the 3 cylinder engine it it?

They are fairly well know for getting rattley. I'm not sure what the cause of it is, think it is either chain or top end wear

I'll second that. My housemate has one and she parks outside my bedroom window. It sounds like a tractor in the mornings

Yeah 3 cylinder 993 cc engine. Isnt the smoothest at the best of times.

I could imagine it being the chain or tappets if it was always there - the strange thing is that it comes and then goes.

sometimes on teh old 3 clynder engine for some reason the spark plug cover, the one with ECOTEC wrote on it that sits atop the engine block becomes a bit loose and rattles at low RPM...
remove it and check and see if noise still there... have had this happen on my one...

Could one of the hydraulic tappits be sticking slightly? I'm thinking along these lines due to it seemingly occuring after an oil change. What grade of oil was used in the service? Is it too thick maybe?

Tappets are pretty noisy in those,

will the noise happen if you rev the car while parked or only when moving? maybe raise the front up, stick it in gear and see if you can pin point it then.,

I used 10w-40 which as far as i can see is the manufactures recommended oil

It happens when the car is in neutral and stopped - so that rules out any of the running gear, plus it sounds fine at idle. Its just when its revved, between 1k and 2k rpm I can hear the noise

Does it happen if you press the clutch, or does it stop? Does it happen at all if the car is moving? I'm thinking of the clutch release bearing, or a spring in the clutch moving/rattling maybe.

Also, try and find out where the noise is coming from. That should make it easier to diagnose

TBH I only really did a quick test after the service - but with the car either driving or in neutral, between 1k and 2k revs, with the window down, I can hear a clackety noise (only for a second maybe less). With the car in neutral, I revved the engine from the engine bay (cable throttle), and it sounded like it was coming from the engine block - but couldnt be sure and didnt have the time to really dig in.

Thanks. I reckon so it's a tappet (hopefully). Is it better or worse with a cold engine or a warm engine? (I'm hoping that it's not a bearing)

As for getting it sorted - A good mechanic is needed to properly diagnose it and sort it. I may be all wrong you see....
