processors - laptops

Just when I thought I had made a decision about a laptop then they start changing the processors to the i3, i5 and i7. For an everyday user of a laptop with nothing too fancy is there any point in waiting a few weeks for the ones with the new processors to be in the stores ( sony wont be in for a few weeks apparently ) or do i not really need the newer processor at all ?

I have a permanent headache trying to sort out the whole laptop thing.

I was told i need 3 to 4 gigs of memory, 500 hard drive, good battery, 15" screen, cd drive and the 2 core processor. however this advice was given before the new i3 etc processors came out.

Should I just stick with the original specs ? they were given to me by techie relative.

The Core i mobile processors should already be available, they have been for a little while now. Including some Sony models - they are definitely released and I have seen them in stock in lots of online stores.

For an everyday user, you certainly don't need the latest gen. Any decent dual-core processor is sufficient for the kind of stuff a basic user would be doing (web, word processing etc). So the advice you've gotten is bang on.

That said, personally I think it is important to get value for money as a consumer. So if you can get a new i3 laptop for the same price as an old Pentium Dual Core, then definitely thats what i'd go for.

Thank you for that advice. That is sort of my feeling also.

I had almost decided on an Acer until I saw the Sony. I have to decide whether to buy mid range Acer or entry level Sony or poss Toshiba. That is why my brain is in meltdown. Honestly you would think I was planning amazing things on this laptop when, honestly, i will prob be doing stuff like this, and music/photo stuff, and minor sports administration stuff.

I want to buy from a store as opposed to online, purely for the ease of returning the laptop for service or something going wrong etc. I dont have a problem with buying stuff online - I do it all the time - but slightly nervous in this instance - probably unnecessarily.

In a way its better because you can prob get the stuff on your original list cheaper now the i3,5,7 series are out.

For normal surfing , word docs etc there is no need for them.

esp if your looking at a laptop , there is rarely much benefit in upgrading a processor on them.
