Pet Shops

    What are your thoughts?

I was in one over the weekend and my heart sank. To see those poor birds flitting from perch to perch in obvious stress was hard to watch. Rabbits trying to get out of pens, dead fish, unwell rodents....

Are they regulated? I wouldn't mind seeing them banned.

Probably more suited to the Animals and Pets forum but anyway...

I have no problem with Caged birds such as Canaries and Budgies. My late Father bred Yorkshire Canaries for many years and even as a Wildlife/Bird lover I can't say they were ever in distress except if one happened to leave a cage and would panic until returned. They bred very well with is often an indication that an animal is content and relaxed.

It sounds like the particular pet shop you were in is in need of some improvement. Dead Fish? Did you mention this to them? You know you can report any poor conditions and have the place checked out if you wish. (The body concerned depends on where you live. e.g. DSPCA, Environment/Animal Cruelty Officer of County Council, etc)

But generally: Pet Shops - I can't find a lot wrong with them. They are often a child's first introduction to animals. Certainly they need to be properly managaed but in general I have no issues with them if they are properly run but that probably goes for people owning pets at all or breeding any animals.

I take it you mean it is a part of chain when you say it is not a once off store.

If it is in Tullamore then I would be very surprised at there being dead animals and animals looking unwell.

There are two stores in Limerick that are part of the same chain as the store in Tullamore, and I am in both on a weekly basis and have never seen dead or unwell animals in either.

If it is as bad as you say it is on a regular basis, then the advice given by Srameen would be what I would do if I was in your position. Your name would not be given to the store, and the relevant authorities would soon get involved should their inspection reveal mistreatment of animals.

No 1, i never said Tullamore.
No 2, Im sure just because the name is the same dosnt mean the standards are the same.

There are a few towns in Offaly Kess so i dont know why you think Tullamore.
Said petshop is not bad, very helpful and friendly staff that are a credit to the store. The other animals are great. Its just the fish that seem to be not (i wont say cleaned, because i dont know) but taken out reguarly.
Kess you are very defensive for a store you've not been in or are not sure which town its in.

True there are a few towns in Offaly, but if it is a pet shop that is part of a chain, then it narrows the field to one store in Offaly, and that one is in Tullamore.

Nothing at all defensive in my original reply, I was just echoing what Srameen said about reporting the store if animals were dead or mistreated. My comment of surprise was that if it was the same chain as in Limerick, then it came as a surprise based on how the Limerick stores are.

And I did use the word IF when I mentioned Tullamore.

Take no offence from what I said as there was none in my comment. I have reported an independent pet shop myself last year, funnily enough mainly due to fish being in tanks with literally three or four inches of water, along with reptiles being in very distressed states, so I have no sympathy for any store being reported for neglecting animals, in fact I encourage people to report it if they are sure.
