Megane or Fiesta?

I'm in the market for a new motor. Nothing fancy with fuel efficiency (hence diesel choice) a priority, then 5 door and space for my clubs.
The Fiesta has a very small boot whereas the Megane can easily accommodate my clubs without having to remove the driver. Offers: scrapage deal €15k for the Megane Diesel, 4 wheel, an engine and a steering column...and a radio/cd.
Fiesta diesel €16k. I see bad reviews of the Megane 9/20 on one website. Is it really that bad? Should I stay a Ford loyalist!

These are cars from different classes, the Megane is a size up. I would take the diesel Megane over the diesel Fiesta every time, it has a better engine and if it is cheaper as well, then it is an easy decision.

Is the OP seriously asking this question?

A megane v fiesta, and the megane is cheaper?

    Thanks guys,

it was a serious question :o. The last car I bought from new was over 20 years ago. My current car is a Ford diesel that has never let me down in the 11 years since I bought it and I'll need a few moments alone with it as I hand over the keys to have it scrapped. I'm told that I'd be better getting the finance sorted myself rather than going through the dealers financier.
Salesman tells me I'm getting €6.5k under the scrappage. As soon as I learn how to PM again Saab Ed I'll drop a line.
Good to have feedback from those who are informed as I know nothing about motors i.e. Megane diesel engine better than Ford. (Stevie Dakota)

    Hey scorthy,
renault have/had financing deal with permanent at 5.9% compared to about 9 - 10% from most banks i tried and 7.5% with credit union. i got part financing on my megane when i bought it. not sure if its still available though, was supposed to be cut off end of feb. ask your dealer.
    cheers,

I wouldn't buy the Fiesta Diesel for €16k when you can get the 1.25 (82bhp) petrol with an average of 49mpg for €12,600 (inc. del and met paint) under the scappage scheme. Alloy wheels come as standard too. This engine was also the choice of Whatcar. I drove one the other day and it has loads of power and beautiful to drive. The Diesel doesn't justify the extra €3,400, for what you're going to save on fuel.

Megane or Fiesta? Sorry, but not a Renault fan at all.

You wont get your Golf clubs in the Fiesta:D

Isn't the Megane estate the same price? Could be a good buy...

The Fiesta has weighty steering and loads of other little things that the UK motoring press hark on about but very little consumers actually care.

The Megane is the car that sounds as if it suits your needs most, so that's the one you should go for.

I doubt it. very small penalty more than likely. Buy the diesel and the torque will compensate for it a lot

Thanks guys; just been onto the sales man. There's at least a 3 month waiting list for the Grand Megane (Estate) 1.5dCi 86 !

Yeah, apparently there's problems in getting them and the clio, I've only managed to see one on the road so far, a black one, and I've been looking out for them.

It's a nice looking motor for sure and they're advertising themselves.
Had to get a lift to work this morning as my old fateful Escort diesel failed to start this morning. It must have over heard me mention "scrappage". First time it's let me down too :(. Coming home last night I thought I had kangaroo diesel (power-no power syndrome) so I topped it up thinking that the diesel might be dirty. I'll bypass the filter this evening and see will that solve the problem.

Yeap...fuel filter all right. Saw a tiny fizzle at the base of the intake pipe. Used Super glued as a sealant. Works fine. Blasted passenger wiper stuck now . And the crack along the windscreen is like the grand canyon and got another chip this morning the size of a small lunar crater.
Tried everywhere for the Grand Megane but no dealer has them for sale. Oh well; 3 month wait it looks like :(.

....Not everywhere ;) A little bird tells me where you can get a Royale Ash Grey at the end of the month and there might even be a Dynamique next week........now who could that be :D

    Mmm, I wonder :D

Maybe you can shed some light on this Ed, what's the delay ? Is it because only a certain amount of cars are assigned to each county and that simply the Irish demand far exceeds the supply ?

Thats it really, huge demand. It ticks all the boxes at the moment, cheap to buy , cheap to run , cheap to tax, looks well and drives well. The perfect recession busting car. :D

It just goes to show you though that when people are offered value they will spend money.

I know there's one in a Cork dealership but it's a demo. Wont part with it because they're getting so many sales on the strength of the demo.

I still can't get over it, Renault were selling nothing 12 months ago, now the factory can't keep up with demand, there are no cars in the country, long wait lists, good products, good prices, it is an amazing turnaround.

The French must think we are a nation of nuts, feast or famine.

We are nuts IMO, €1,500 euro worth of nuts. Why didn't we use a scrappage deal to support our own manufacturing jobs before they went to China? FFS those French are havin' a right fuhken laugh alright. Haw haw haw.

I don't know, I wouldn't say you'd get too much much Guinness (owned by the corporate beast that is Diageo) for an oul Corsa, you can see how you get on at your local though.

Anyway, I don't recall any salesman or receptionists I spoke to lately being French.

For the government the scrappage deal is about propping up our VRT intake (with dealer jobs being a secondary benefit).
