if he's a spring calver it isn't too bad, its better to feed them well now through this poor growth spell and achieve a high peak milk level. once growth comes he can swap grass for ration and reduce his feed costs greatly while still having a high production level.

thats 29c gone before you factor in all other costs , i think he is crazy

My god that is some level of feeding

are u sure its 29c per litre and not per gallon which would seem closer to sanity

can you give a breakdown of his feed costs ?

milking really well for argument lets say 25l/d most likely more
    @29c/l costs = €7.25

if they were getting 12kgs of meal costing €240 (very highly unlikely!!!) per ton it would cost €2.88

cant see them eating much forage even if was bought in and expensive

€4.37 remains to be accounted for.

just wondering how do you get his cost of feeding at 29c/l?

for example i'm feeding 5 kgs of a 175euro/tonne ration working out at 87.5 cents/cow (17.5c X 5). they're prob eating 7kgs of grass at round a cost of 49cent/cow ( i think grass works out at 7cent a kg?). so each cow is eating 1.365euro a day give r take. they're yielding 18kgs of milk on average. do i get my feed cost by dividing the 1.365 by 18? would that make my cost of feed at 7.5c/l??? or am i way off:D

if that is the case then i'd agree with ya in that 29c/l feed cost is crazy.

i will find out more and get back to yiz thats what he told me

    example
    ration @e250= 25c/kg
    1kg ration = 0,8 l milk (a very good holestein will do 1:1)
    1l milk costs 31.25 cent
    manuf milk @ 25 c/l leaves a deficit of 6.25c
ration needs to be e200 to break even

how ever to a certain extent boby condition pre breeding needs to be taken into account, as well as how much forage is avaible till magic day, which will be some time in may at this rate

cows out day/night since 1st/14th feb on 4.5 kg 20% ration plus 1.2 kg/dm silage and 2.2kg/dm maize as tmr at moment 40 % farm grazed

What would be the average cost of a litre of milk say if you only accounted for feed ,silage/grass, electricty, maintenence. Leaving out loan repayments and wages etc?

The 29c/l has to be wrong for feed alone. Maybe he 's confused at overall costs: feed, labour, repayments etc ? Could be including variable costs and fixed costs.

Local profit monitor farm done variable costs at 7.8 c/l for 2009. Was best in our discussion group. Know anyone that done better?

let him at it, don't let it worry you. You have a life of your own surely?

Teagasc Profit Monitor figures for spring calving herds for the 2009 production year show that the average purchased feed cost per litre is 3.13 cent per litre with the top 10% achieving 2.16 cent per litre and the bottom 10% spending 4.73 cent per litre
Total variable costs (which includes feed, fertiliser, vet, AI, contractor) comes to 9.85 cent per litre on average. The top 10% trim that down to 7.79 cent per litre and the bottom 10% - 12.64 cent per litre.
These cent per litre costs are based on total spending and litres produced for the full year
