Upgrading Hard drive for HP6700

Hey all, Have a 250GB hard drive and I was hoping to upgrade to a bigger drive however I've been told that HP recommend not to go beyong 250GB as other drives may not be compatible. How would I confirm this any other way? I was thinking of a 320GB hard drive by the way
