    So you’ve got yourself the 4x4 you’ve always wanted, and now that you’ve riding a foot or two above everyone else you’ll not want to come down. Only there’s a hitch - you need new tyres and haven’t a clue what to buy – well, don’t let the garage pawn you off on those dusty old Michelens from the back yard – read on and you’ll know all you need to for buying 4x4 tyres. O.K. if you’ve got someone who can do all this for you – then call them in now, otherwise read on and learn for yourself.When buying 4x4 tyres you need to know the following language to get the best for your 4x4. Tyre Type: this defines the proper use of the tyre.

    LT means this is a Light Truck tyre which is the one for your 4x4, If the tyre had a P then the tyre would be for a passenger car. Tyre Width is the width of the tyre measured in millimeters from sidewall to sidewall. Your average 4x4 tyre width will be 265 mm. Aspect Ratio is the ratio of the height of the tyre’s cross-section to its width. 75 means that the height is equal to 75% of the tyre’s width.

    Construction tells you how the tyre was put together. The "R" stands for radial, which means that the body ply cords, which are layers of fabric that make up the body of the tyre, run radially across the tyre from bead to bead. A "B" indicates the tyre is of bias construction, meaning that the body ply cords run diagonally across the tyre from bead to bead, with the ply layers alternating in direction to reinforce one another. Wheel Diameter is the width of the wheel from one end to the other. Load Index is a number that corresponds to the maximum load that a tyre can support when properly inflated. So is your 4x4 a workhorse or a pleasure vehicle for toting nothing more than the shopping basket? You will also find the maximum load in pounds and in kilograms molded elsewhere on the tyre sidewall.

    Speed Rating is a number that corresponds to the maximum service speed for a tyre. "S" means that the tyre has a maximum service speed of 112 mph. Very important to remember that a speed-rated tyre be replaced with a tyre having an equivalent or greater speed rating.

    In situations where tyres having different top speed ratings are mixed on a vehicle, the maximum speed certification is limited to the top speed certification of the tyre with the lowest speed rating.

    Speed ratings do not indicate how well a tyre handles or corners. They certify the tyre"s ability to withstand high speed.
