New Vhi DeCare Dental Plan takes the pain out of a visit to the dentist
Co. Dublin, Ireland — 09 Feb. 2010 — No Waiting Periods on innovative Vhi DeCare Dental Product
Vhi DeCare Dental today announced details of a new dental product which has been developed in response to changes to the PRSI Dental Treatment Benefits scheme, called Vhi DeCare Dental Starter.
Two million people were previously eligible for subsidised treatments under the popular Government PRSI scheme. In 2008 alone, 400,000 people visited the dentist for an annual exam and 1.5 million treatment items were availed of. Following its withdrawal, there are fears of a big drop in attendance at the dentist for regular check ups and routine dental care.
Vhi DeCare Dental Starter is a unique product with no waiting period for the first six months thus anyone can avail of the benefits of the product immediately. Other benefits include up to 70% cover for investigative and preventative treatment, up to 50% cover for basic treatment such as fillings, tooth extractions and emergency treatment and up to 40% cover for major treatment such as root canal treatment and dentures plus bespoke children’s benefits for examinations and sealants.
According to Declan Moran, Director of Marketing and Business Development, Vhi Healthcare said: “Vhi DeCare Dental is committed to providing affordable solutions that protect and enhance the oral health of all Irish persons. We consulted with our members following the withdrawal of the PSRI scheme, and created this product in response to their needs. As the leading provider of dental insurance in Ireland we are uniquely positioned to respond to this changing dental landscape.”
According to Dr Ger Gavin Chief Dental Officer Vhi DeCare Dental “We believe that maintaining the oral health of the Irish population is important and we would like to encourage our customers to keep attending the dentist. As such we have introduced an entry level product that will provide a very broad level of basic dental cover from as little as €10 a month. This new product will provide valuable financial assistance towards the costs associated with many common treatments and will reduce the costs associated with examinations and treatments ensuring that people will be less inclined to avoid the dentist due to concerns about costs. We also welcome the commitment to waive the waiting period for the first six months.”
Vhi DeCare Dental Starter will be available from 1st April 2010.

There will be a lot of products out there over the next few months for dental insurance to repalce the PRSI scheme.

It is important that both dentist and patients read the small print very well because the schemes may not be as good as you might think initially. It says that it will cost from €10 per month which is not very much but what does it get you? The insurance comoany has to make money by the patient paying more and the dentist getting less. Now I dont expect the public to have much sympathy for dentists who are often regarded as mercanary and overcharging but most dont overcharge and reduced fees usually means lower quality and higher through-put of patients

The PRSI scheme is suspended so it may return in some form or another but I wouldnt hold my breath for that. What the dentists and patients really need to do is complain and lobby politicians about the unfairness of removing a benefit that they have paid for and continue to pay for through PRSI.

Thank you both for replies Fitzgeme and Daydreamer!

Yes you are so right...on query there is a wait of 12mths for both
schemes the article as I read it said there was not for the first six months

My teeth must be going to my head to even THINK there might be a good
    deal out there.

Hopefully enough people will start making a lot of NOISE over the PRSI
dental and optical benefit removal but it doesnt seem to be happening yet.:(:(

It very difficult to get a good value insurance for your teeth. The problem is if you are lucky enough to need little work then its too expensive. If you need lots of expensive work you are either uninsurable or the coverage will not be sufficient to cover all your requirements. As daydreamer says the insurance companies wish to make profit so you have to ask "whats is in it for me over putting 200 euro a year into a bank account" There will be lots more about this in the future and I feel that there are some good products out there, but its not until people start using them that the real issues will become apparent.
