    Hi

Recently got engaged and thinking of Portugal or Spain as possible wedding destinations. Just wondering if anyone has been to a wedding/ had their wedding in either country and could point us in the right direction.

    Thanks!

I got married in Italy last year and it has been a wonderful experience! We travelled to Florence and we spent 3 unforgettable days in the Chianti area...our wedding was in fabulous chapel and we organized the reception in a villa on the hills of Florence. It has been like a fairy tale.
For that I have to thank you Emiliano and Veronica from We Wedding and Events. Try to contact them...they are fantastic!

I post here the website.....just in case... www.we-weddingandevents.com

    good luck!

For Portugal, if you are having a Catholic blessed wedding you must already be legally/civil married here before having the ceremony over there. Think you have
to be legally married 3 months or something (that might not be the case but its in my head for some reason!).

    Hi,

We have been to my best friend's wedding in Sorrento, Italy... amazing sea views, sunshine, friendly people, delicious food and everything was absolutely perfect! Everyone was happy and enjoyed a lot... the wedding was organised by a brilliant and friendly local wedding planner ... we have not decided a date yet, but for sure I'd love to get married there and I would like Rosanna to be my wedding planner... you can have a look at http://www.italy-weddingplanner.com for more info...

    Good luck & best wishes,

    Kizzy :)

Tying the knot in Malta this summer....it's refreshing to deal with people who are as excited as we are about the big day....hotel staff who suggest more ways to make the day magical such as twinkle lights along a footpath that leads to a private beach, chapel personnel who pull out all the stops and cannot be more helpful, corkage fees of 5 euros, getting a 5 star hotel restaurant overlooking the mediterranean sea for 600 euros...and a silver service meal for 30 euros per person. Local supermarkets sell Freixenet Champers for 5.50 euros...come on....I could get married ten times over in Malta and it would not cost as much as it does here.....I highly recommend it...

Have heard that from a few people that you need to have Civil Ceremony in Ireland first. Is that true? Does it only apply to Portugal? THanks!

no you can get married in portugal easily enough. A lawyer has to take care of the paperwork.

to have a church wedding/blessing in Portugal you must first be legally married in Ireland.

don't think this is the case anymore. we're getting married there next year and are getting married in a church and getting all the legal side of it done too over there, just have to pay some lawyer to sort it all out for us.

OP we're using www.algarveweddingplanners.com so drop karen an email if you've any questions

now that is confusing, maybe there are 2 ways of doing it, getting the legal stuff done here (ie get married in registrar's office and get marriage cert here) or get legal stuff done over there..have an algarve based lawyer to look after getting marriage cert organised.
we were definately told to have the civil wedding here though!

no we are doing it ourselves...to be honest it's very straightforward, exactly the same as here...I went over in Feb mid-week and met with the Curia and a representative of the marriage registry office...very helpful....met with hotel manager, agreed a package, sampled food/wine, viewed venue and rooms etc. In the end I got a quote of 1800 euros which includes full use of restaurant and large balcony, 4 course meal for 30 people, wine/water for 30 people, bridal suite and cake...corkage has to be added on that's all...the restaurant was recently updated so decor is very modern and does not require any "frilly" bits...balcony will have outdoor furniture, candles etc....I am trilled with the deal to be honest...

Malta looks fab! Have been looking into it also. How is it for flights? Is is mostly Dublin? Have guests who will need to come from Cork as well. Just wondering if there are any companies/ planners in Cork who work with Destination weddings that people can recommend?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 667 ✭✭✭Karmella

Heffernans in Cork have a wedding planning department, I am using them at the moment and they are fine (they planned a friend's wedding also).

Their website is www.heffernansweddingsabroad.ie and Nichola & Michelle are the girls working there. its handy that they are travel agents aswell as they can really help with booking travel for your guests.

We are going to Italy, but they do Malta aswell and showed us some really lovely resorts / hotels etc there when we were looking into it first. We just had our hearts set on Italy though....

my sister in law is getting married in portugal in May but they were told they have to have civil ceremony in Ireland, so they are having this the week before they go.

This was a major problem for them as on one could tell them, i thnk they are using Algarve weddings too, from reading this now, it seems to be the contrary

What is the actual law around this? My sis in law wold have loved to have the wedding all on one an dnot have to to a civil ceremony in ireland, but was told she had to.

Guys I don't know how relevant it is to other European countries but:

My cousin was married in Italy a few years ago. He said there's a lot of red tape regarding getting married over there. So, they got married in the church over there and then got the civil part done over here in a registry office.
