I have a full category B driving licence and was told that if i went for a theory test for category W ( work vehicle ) i could get that category put on to my current B licence.
I passed my theory test last week and now i was told i will need to sit a practical driving test by a friend for category W :confused:
Can anybody clarify for me what the situation is please.

Im also wondering do i need a different licence to draw a trailor ?
Small builders trailor and a small boat.
Any input would be greatly appreciated

    Thanks

A big trailer is category "EB", but you can tow a light trailer up to 750KG laden without this on just a B

My full licence came with W automatically when I got B so I dunno about it; the theory test at that time covered "BMW", cars, mopeds and W. I never had W on my provisional but I got my full licence issued in a "country" tax office (Naas) where they probably assume any young lad might need W!

Can you imagine having to go to a driving test centre in a John Deere to do a driving test:D
Wonder if ploughing is on the test !!

I think your right about the 750kg weight limit for the trailor but whats the story with category W anybody

You should have automatically received the W category when you passed your B test, so my guess is that it was a mistake by the motor tax office and they forgot to put it on your license!

    RSA FAQ:

    Q. May I tow a trailer on my full B license?
    A. Yes, provided
    (1) the design gross vehicle weight of the trailer does not exceed the unladen weight of the drawing vehicle and the combination does not exceed 3500kg or
    (2) the design gross vehicle weight of the trailer does not exceed 750kg If you wish to tow a heavier trailer you will have to apply for a category EB license.

Q.I have a full B (car) license. Does this entitle me to drive a motorcycle?
    A. The holder of a category B license granted prior to 21 October, 2006 is entitled to drive a moped up to 50cc with a maximum design speed of 45 km/hour. All category B licenses granted, for the first time, on or after 21 October, 2006 do not hold this entitlement. Such license holders wishing to drive a category M vehicle would have to obtain a learner permit in category M and successfully undergo the practical driving test in order to obtain a full license in this category.

I think the same applies for Mopeds and Work Vehichles, but I can't be certain.

No it does not, you are still entitled to a W category even if you have passed your test after October 06.

    Thanks for the reply.
I passed my B driving test in 1998 so from what i read, im entitled to apply to have the W category put on to my licence.
Does this mean i have wasted my time and money doing a theory test in category W ??
Prometric offer no advice on these matters by the way.All they want is your money.
