Roundabout Signalling

I have run into a bit of confusion with roundabout signalling. I know that if you are going left, you indicate left. Going straight ahead you don't indicate until you pass the exit before it. And if you are going right you indicate right, the indicate left when leaving the roundabout.

My problem is when you are going "straight". I have had 2 different driving instructors with 2 different explanations.

Say if you are coming to a roundabout and you have an exit to the left, then the next exit isn't directly ahead, but say at 2 o'clock (off to the right). Is this considered as "straight ahead" and you don't indicate, or do you indicate right showing that you are going around the roundabout?

I hope you can understand what I'm saying. I was getting a bit confused myself!

It is a confusing one but you should indicate right in this case.

It's about position on the roundabout too.

If you treat a roundabout like a clock face, you always approach from 6 o'clock. You should adopt the left lane from any exit from 6 to 12 o'clock. Any exit after 12 o'clock should be approached using the right lane and signalling right then left as appropriate.

You seem to have a good grasp of the signalling procedure so maintain what you've been doing here. You would indicate left at approximately 12 o'clock

Ask yourself the question: Would I use the left lane to exit at 3 o'clock?
The answer would be no, it's too far round the roundabout. The same would apply to any exit after 12 unless the road markings, an obstruction or the Gardai dictate.

    Hope that helps

    Thanks for clearing that up.

Would I get marked down if I didn't indicate for an exit at 1 o'clock do you think? A lot of the time an exit isn't exactley straight ahead and I don't bother signalling as its the only exit in front of me. :/

To be honest it would depend on the roundabout, size etc.

There's no easy answer really, it could go either way.

Strictly speaking if you follow the after 12 routine you wouldn't go wrong.

My advice is if there is a roundabout like that ask your ADI and stick with his advice. Sometimes you can ask too many people and it confuses things.

    Best of luck
