How can I find out if my hardware will support audio with HDMI?

I've a GeForce 8400 GS 512MB 16x PCI-Express graphics card with v180 drivers and PCI sound card (Hercules something or other).

Has anyone ever got HDMI audio working in, say, Ubuntu?

I'm fairly sure that generation Nvidia don't do audio over HDMI, I'm sure it was Ati only back then. Newer generation Nvidias do now though, maybe it been added through in later drivers

8600GT can do it on my laptop. Since it's the same generation card, it should be able to.

I did it *once*, though can't remember how.

You also need to consider what value, if any, audio over HDMI will give you in a Linux environment because of DRM (digital rights management) - HDCP. HDMI is designed to prevent DRM protected content from "escaping" a controlled pipeline of licensed kit - Sony, Microsoft and similar brand names spring to mind.

While you can use your own video camera to record material and send that via HDMI cable without running into any DRM wall - any professionally created content - eg BluRay, DVD audio will not work.

"Hollywood" pays hundreds of millions to political parties to get them to pass laws to protect their monopolies of content - so they can charge high prices to users. Britain is about to pass a euphemistically titled "Digital Economy" law which is nothing more than a package of measures to control access to content and restrict freedom of speech generally - ie Hollywood or an ISP / government agency will be able to disconnect you from the internet forever and a day at the drop of a hat if they don't like what you are doing with your PC. They are basically turning your internet connection into an HDMI cable to restrict internet access to a walled garden of stuff.
