Need Advice From Any Serving Gardai

    Hello,

I am in the process of trying to acquire a police letter of good conduct from abroad. However they will not send it to me directly but want a local law enforcement agency to receive it on my behalf and confirm my identity in their presence before handing it to me. I went to my local Garda station and asked the Garda if they would receive it on my behalf and he told me they don't do this. Can any serving Gardai advise me how I might go about resolving this issue please as it is essential I receive this clearance certificate for a my new job.

    Jay Landsman

Gardaí are not going to do this as to do so would imply that they have guaranteed it's authenticity. See if they'll send it to their embassy or consulate here.

    Hey J,

I'm having a similar problem. The foreign government I'm applying to can't go through the Garda Vetting Bureau. Neither can they get one for the foreign visas. It's ridiculous, all they want is a piece of paper saying no current convictions or warrants!

Discus you're looking for a police clearance cert, which is for naturalisation to a foreign country or for adoption purposes. Itbasically states that you have no convictions or warrants, you can get the form for it through your local Garda district HQ.

The op is having a problem in that a foreign police force wants to send something similar to him but wants to do it through An Garda Siochana which is something that is not done.

The Garda Vetting Unit will only supply information to organisations that have registered with it, and only then on receipt of a signed official consent form. They don't deal with individuals and are quite specific about this on their portion of the Garda site.

All of this is in the FAQs on the Garda website, if people would bother to take the time to look.

He said the foreign government couldn't get clearance for a visa. The FAQs tell you exactly how to go about getting a clearance certificate for foreign residency applications.

To be fair Gardaí, technology, internet, website and use in the same sentance dont really spring into most peoples thuought process...

Same for alot of the public service I'm afraid.

Put 'Garda Vetting' into Google and you'd get pretty much the same info from the citizens information website. It's not hard, to be fair.

I'm sure he said "cant" and not "couldnt", still nothing to imply that research was not done. Regarding your Google comment, again a little irrelevant as neither of us know how much research this person has done. (That poster may well be the guy that looks after the FAQs on garda.ie, doesnt change the facts as presented in his post, assuming its a he)

I fully intend to, thanks for the advice.

Does that apply to all pedants?

It wasn't advice, it was a request.

Yes, it applies to all who have nothing to contribute to the OP's query.

    Surely the embassy/consulate of this country will be used to this and will be able to offer the correct advice;
I could not see any station doing this for the OP unless they knew someone in the job and even then

Have it sorted now. No, it's not being done through the central vetting unit. Nor is it the naturalisation one. It's a just a police reference. Got a Garda to do it for me. Just says no convictions, warrents and he's a nice lad.

It's not for residency, I didn't say it was. It's just a job.
