You should use iTunes to get songs on to your iPod. I don't think realplayer will do it. There are alternative applications to iTunes that will allow you to copy music to and from your iPod.

I am speaking from a Mac point of view so if something doesn't work on a PC, perhaps someone can chip in with a correction.

Setup iTunes. There is a guide here: http://www.ehow.com/how_2016268_install-itunes-pc.html

If your music is in .wma format or others that are not recognised by iTunes, you will need to get a converter than can convert them to mp3 or aac format.

Assuming you have setup iTunes and all the music is loaded into it. Plug in your iPod. An icon for it should appear in iTunes. If itunes asks if you want to automatically sync with your iPod I would suggest specifying manually managing your music.

Select all tracks in iTunes you want on your iPod and just drag them to the iPod icon. They should then just be copied across. Select the iPod icon when you have finished and eject it, but you might just want to setup some playlists first.

It would be a good idea to sort out all the tags on your music, like title, artist album, genre etc before you copy your files across to the iPod. iTunes can get album artwork and add that for you so do that before copying across if you want to be able to use that feature.

If you have CDs you want to rip, iTunes does a good job of that and can get all the track titles and artwork and tag all the tracks with the info.

Hasn't iTunes been able to convert .wma files for a long time now?

Having just looked it up, it appears you are correct, The windows version of iTunes can do that.

The Mac version of iTunes can't, so I wasn't aware of the that capability.
