Right I'm looking for a challenge, so I've decided to invest €2k in oil stocks.

I will invest in only one Oil share at a time, I'll sell when I feel its time to take profits and buy another oil share.

I'm hoping to trade at least 5 oil shares this year.

Challenge duration March to December 2010.

My picks will not be based on fundamentals instead they will be based on rumours and sentiment.

My first share will be Bowleven PLC
Bowleven has a busy year head with up to 4 drills planned, all drills are fully funded, if Bowleven strikes oil it will be transformational for the company. Bowleven is currently undervaled based on its NAV and should be priced at approx €1.30. First drill date due to begin in April/May.

Current share price €1.18 No of Shares 1694 Value £1998

There is a strong possibility that I could end up with zero at the end of the 10 months. Alternatively I could end up with 100% + :D

    Hi Yobr,

I'm currently looking at 22 oil stocks. None of which are mentioned in my Energy Portfolio below. At this stage I am unsure which of these companies will have the best resources available when I decide to sell Bowleven.

When I do decide to sell Bowleven I may not invest in any of the 22 stocks I'm researching. It all depends on what Oil Company has the most potential at the time. Sorry for being vague but I cant give you a definate answer at this stage.

Understand. Actually I only read in the last few minutes that you used to be Lexus1976 and I am a regular follower of your posts on here. Your other posts give some insights into your thinking on similar shares. thanks

Nice tread Speculator... If you trade on rumours and sentiment, My bets are you beat the market hands down instead of fundamentals.

Hi, just wondering did you exit Bowleven? I see it went up to the mid 1.30's although it has since fallen back....

Hi mate, still invested and will be for at least another 4 to 6 weeks.

The whole sector took a bit of a battering this week due to Desire drilling a duster. Things will begin to heat up as we get closer to the spud date.

Recommend Dragon Oil - DGO as more gains to come. I bought €1000 worth a year ago at €1.59, now trading at €5.65. Was just for fun at the time so I appreciate you sharing your oil experiences.

Well obviously I've done very well in a year, and am up over 200%. Most analysts would place it as a buy but I guess over the short term it's not suitable for your strategy. Best of luck :)

The early indications are positive, I'll hold on to this share for a few more days before moving on to my next pick. The current conditions in the market have affected the majority of shares I have on my Radar. I have been paying very close attention to Faroe Petroleum and BP, after a lot of consideration these have been marked off my target list.

    Kevin Hart, Chief Executive said:

"We are very pleased with results obtained so far from the IE-3 appraisal well. The initial log evaluation is very encouraging as it confirms the upper sands are in pressure communication with IE-2z and highlights the presence of light oil and gas condensate at multiple additional horizons. Further evaluation is required, including testing, but the results to date are promising in the context of the IE field development area and for our Cameroon acreage as a whole."

I've sold Bowleven (BLVN) @ £1.46 with a gain of 24% (£2,478). I believe this share has a fair bit higher to go, however there are better opportunities on the market in my opinion.

The next share I will be purchasing is Salamander (SMDR). Althought the first drill of the year hit a duster I believe this company has massive potential. Salamander is now moving the rig to the next drill site Rock Lobster. This is a significant well and if they strike it lucky, it will be transformational for the company and its share price.

Current Share Price £2.32 No of Shares 1067 Value £2,476

There are too many too mention, here are a few publications and websites that I use for my research:
    • FT
    • Business Post
    • fool.co.uk
    • oilbarrel.com
    • barchart.com
    • upstreamonline.com
    • rigzone.com

Faroe Petroleum, the independent oil and gas company focusing principally on
exploration, appraisal and undeveloped field opportunities in the Atlantic
margin, the North Sea and Norway, is pleased to announce an oil discovery in
well 6406/3-8 T2 on the Maria prospect (Faroe 30%).

Despite the Faroe discovery, I'm confident that Salamander has alot more potential. Only time will tell.

No probs, but please note these companies are high risk and very volatile.

The share price may drop significantly in value if they dont locate oil on their next drilling campaign (Rock Lobster).

As always do your own research before investing.

Remember: tips and advice on an online forum are to be taken with a pinch of salt.

Absolutely. As I said, it's a small amount which will be no problem if written down to zero. It's just an interest investment to add to my pretty low risk portfolio (except for the Ultra short gold ETF  ).

i read today that Rock lobster proved fruitless. Is SMDR still a "hold" for you? Their price didnt drop too much so the market must not have been expecting much success there. Currently £2.23.

    Interesting thread btw.

Ah well, you win some you lose some. By the looks of things the market has decided its not a big blow in the grand scheme of things. Will stay put for the moment. :)

3rd time lucky next well is the Angklung due to be drilled in Aug/Sept.

    Hi Trubobaby,

Going to hold on to SMDR for another few months. I have done a lot of research with the other oil companies and none of them offer the same potential.

Gain on Salamander 12.63%. The over all gain on the initial investment of 2k is 38.5% (2,788.07)

Its not 100% but I can live with it :)

    Happy Christmas investors!

Have a look at Falkland oil and gas FOGL ,their drilling in the Falkland basin, where Rockhopper hit pay dirt in the summer, and was a 10 bagger as a result.
Their first well was dissapointing but theirs alot more in the pipeline for this summer.
