So are we supposed to praise them for this and give them treats?

Why are they going on trips for Paddy's day?

personally i steer clear of politics, it bores me really.

but to expect them to pay for their own flights and accommodation is ridiculous. they shouldn't be going on the trips in the first place.

I don't mind it. It's when they come back and go back to work is the problem.

    Where are they going?

No St Patricks parade is complete without a fat ugly Irish man or woman plonked in the middle.

If the rest of the world recognize our national day, the least we can do is make sure they can celebrate it correctly.

At least when they are out of the country , they can't do us any damage.

John Gormley will be in charge of the country while the other ministers are away.

so what if a few go abroad like to the US /oz/uk etc. To areas where we have a sizable diaspora. and maybe a few others like china to promote business.
    Maybe not Lesotho though.
We have to promote Ireland somehow. on paddys day ireland is all over the international media so we should milk it. the politicians shouldn't use it to milk expenses though.

But the whinging about flights / hotels is getting out of hand. should they try to get a berth on a trawler and then stay in a hostel.
So long as its within reason i dont give a ****.

I don't think you lot realise how important these trips are for the country. They won't be lying on a beach...they will be working and promoting the country.

Read this in the paper today and Brian Cowen was quoted as saying: "Unless there is a compelling reason to do otherwise, first class flights, limousines, hotel suites and VIP lounges will not be used by ministers." - I mean, are these guys for real!?

The best I know of is the Mayor of Donegal who is paying for his own trip to the US. Fair play to him for that, not brilliant though as he only paid because he realised the trip probably be funded by the tax payer.Link

After typing this I realise how mad it sounds for me to be giving some guy earning good money credit for paying for his own holiday. Such is Ireland though that this is something worth mentioning .

Basically what they always do. To kiss ass and pretend to be important when nobody really gives a damn about their visits.
