Airsoft range limitations

    Hi folks,

I've been playing for a couple of months so far, but only indoors in GTAC-urban. All going well, will be heading out to Potumna for first outdoor game this Sunday. Indoors, the limited range of airsoft AEGs is not a problem but what is it like outdoors? I guess it wouldn't be too bad in a forest but generally speaking how often do you find yourself in a position that you can see but cannot hit your enemy due to range limitations (beyond 150')? Is this frustrating?

Looking forward to it in any case. Hopefully ZOD (AKA Evilrobotshane) can keep the rain and wind off.

you dont usually have problems with range outdoors most aegs can reach out beyond 150-175 depending on your hop up and fps ,changing your hop up to a guarder silicon will bring fairy decent improvement in range once you have it embedded and dialed in ,
you will find at Gtac you wont be engageing over vast ranges thought it a woodland site you will still find engagements well under 150ft and 100ft it all depend on numbers , more players closer fights "target rich enviroment" less players longer ranges less targets

That's one of the considerations in establishing an airsoft site - the terrain should be close enough that the limited range doesn't become a factor much. In practical terms it happens from time to time alright, which is the price we pay for varied layouts. Because airsoft guns are quiet you won't be giving away your position to a target who's out of range by having a go at them, anyway, so it's not as frustrating as it could be.

I think I've got the weather nailed down. Have a good game!

Playing outdoors isn't a problem. I've only played indoors once and I only play outdoors. Wind can be a factor but that can be part remedied by using heavier BBs. The only problem with that is that the range decreases slightly. I find that there's a few easy ways of overcoming possible range problems without going over the legal limit.

Changing your hop-up bucking to a soft type grips the BB more effectively while putting less pressure on it. That will keep the FPS closer to what it was before you engaged the hop up giving you potentially greater range. AFAIK this is increased if you use a H-shaped hop-up nub but they're fairly hard to come by, I think.

Changing your barrel to a tightbore makes it more accurate and I've seen some good results with them. However, I've personally owned a Tanio Koba Hop-Twist barrel and that thing is just insane. It changes the entire arc of the BB because it puts a fraction of the resistance of a smooth barrel on the BB. The accuracy and range increase is just stupid. To the point where I was able to outshoot other AEGs also at 1J and I was able to hit or put fire on nearly everyone I could see (within reason :D). I love them so much that I'm getting another one.

(Word to the wise: When reading about the Tanio Koba barrels online, a lot of the people who don't like them have actually tried to use them well over or well below 1 Joule. They're specifically designed to function close to 1J)

    Hope that helps a bit.

Just to ask, from where you got your Tanio Koba Hop-Twist barrel?

I use one of the TK barrels in my L96 and I can confirm the massive difference in performance.

Mine was sourced by Liam at Airsofteire and at a decent price too.

I got mine second hand. They've become absurdly expensive recently and I have no idea why. No-one seems to have stock anywhere, which is strange as Tanio Koba are a Japanese company that wouldn't have been affected by the Chinese crackdown.

WGC have some in stock for a P90, a VSR, the TM AUG, M14, M16 and a few pistols.

At around $70 a pop, it's a bit steep for me.

The Tanio Koba website is painful to look at.
