Hi, I was unemployed for a year and was on job seekers allowance 196 euro and received 42 euro rent allowance, total weekly being 238 per week. I recently got a job which i am glad after so long and I am very grateful, but the pay will be 288 euros per week. I am wondering if I am entitled to rent allowance or anything or will i lose out now im working again,I also have to travel to work which could cost me 60 euros a week, this would mean that I would be better off unemployed if I m not entitled to anything else. If anyone has any info for me please advise....(i would be working 4 or more days in the week on a 32 hour contract )

    thanks

you could be better off in the short term on JSA but consider the following:

    1) there are more opportunities for advancement when you're in a job than when you're out of one

    2) the government may restructure unemployment benefits again in next year's budget

    3) the experience you gain from employment and the benefits of being able to put this on your CV is valuable

If travelling costs are your main concern (and they seem to be only costing you 10 euro per week) then look into sharing lifts with other people who live/work in the same areas as you do, or moving closer to work. Cycling, depending on how far away you are, could also be an option.
