Developing Film in Dublin

I was wondering if anyone know's somewhere that develops rolls of film cheaply?
I've managed to clock up about 10 rolls and I don't have the space (or the know how) to develop them myself. The thought of spending about €90 isn't that appealing!

I've tried the search but there isn't really anything up to date that I could see.

    Thanks!

I'd ring up a few places and ask them to do a deal with you for say 40 euro to develop those rolls and tell them you don't want a "freebie roll" - sure the way the companies are at the moment they'd be delighted of any business and plus you might become a regular customer of theirs - win win.

where ya getting 90 euro from...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 213 ✭✭Scamp-

Gunns said it would be about €9 each. I figure €8-€9 is the going rate around town.

I work in a Fuji Lab and I know they charge around €9 for a 36exp roll. That said, we usually start dropping the price once you're doing a few of them. Your best bet might be to get them dev only and scanned to CD. 10 rolls done that way would cost 30 quid (3 quid dev and burn where I work) and you'd only have to print the ones you wanted to.

Where are you working Captain Flaps? €3 for dev and scan sounds quite good! What res are the scans done at?

Not that high. Aound 1600x1200 if memory serves, I've never done it for my own negs and since we're a mainstream lab most people don't even realise that the resolution makes a difference.

I'm in Unicare Pharmacy in Nutgrove, the general 'standard' price is a fiver per roll for dev and scan, but if you leave in a few and say you were quoted €3 (maybe say Rob sent you :P) we'd do it for that.

We have probably met, I came in there I don't know how many times to pick up boxes of the expired Fuji film.:)
Glad to see you guys will/might do a discount of 3 per roll. Since Nutgrove closer to my house than the only other place I know of that will charge that price.:D
Do you have any way of doing a higher Resolution scan?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,834 ✭✭✭Captain Flaps

God, the expired film. Still a few boxes of it left, thought it's 8 months out at this stage. I think we can do a scan around 2400x1800 maybe, but it takes a LOT longer. Would probs be a 48 hour service. The again, drop in earlyish any Sunday and I can probably sort something out, that's the only full day I work.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,220 ✭✭✭Slidinginfinity

Great, Sunday is big shop day for the week. I will try to stop in, I have about 5 rolls in need of dev and scan. I would happily wait for higher res scans.:)
If you have any more of the expired stuff around I would be happy to take it off your hands. :D

Dropped 5 rolls in to Rob in Nutgrove today, 3 euro a pop. Nice guy.

Just wanted to bump this. I have 2 rolls of Ilford HP5 that need to be developed. Anybody know anywhere in Dublin I can get this done? I'm in Leixlip but can travel into Dublin quite easily

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,760 ✭✭✭Effects

Conns or Gunnes. Gunnes did a terrible job on some B&W for me a few years back and I haven't returned but other people seem to like their service. I probably had an off day.

Unfortunately I haven't got a clue, I dev all my own film. People do speak highly of gunnes though, Conns do it as well IIRC, and the Camera Exchange on Georges St.

I use camera exchange on George's St. They do the b+w work every thursday. So if you pop it in on friday you'll be waiting a week. Pop it in on a wednesday you can pick up on the friday. I just get dev and disc, no prints. Not sure of price for general public but about a tenner I'd say.

Gunn's is a geat shop but I've had mixed results regarding quality of b+w developing.

Brilliant, I'll drop them in there next week then.

    Thanks for the replies.

I develop B&W film and offer a traditional printing service but do not offer any scanning at present.

How much do you charge? I would ideally be looking for digital copies as well but if the price difference is that much I could do without

€7.95 per roll plus return postage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 545 ✭✭✭amdgilmore

Before I learned to develop myself I got quotes of about €12-17 per roll for developing and scanning B&W in Gunns and Conn's (depending on the scan quality). That was pretty much why I learned to develop myself.

You might want to ring them and double check the prices, but it was definitely in or around that figure.

BTW, Humberklog - I think Camera Exchange send their film to Gunn's to develop. I vaguely recall the guy with the glasses in CE telling me that at some point.

For black and white? That's very cheap.

+1 on Gunns. I would be a regular there and have always found them great. If you need the film pushed/pulled just let them know. Hand develop is usually ready in 1-3 days. 4-4.50 a roll.

Yeah I heard that too. I'll ask in CE tomorrow.

What do gunnes actually use ? I assume they just use the same dev for everything, some multipurpose one like DDX or ID11 or something ?

    RO9 Special.

AKA Studional / Rodinal Special ? I've never used it. Would you use it to push 800/1600/3200 ? Doesn't seem ideal based on the time honoured method of "reading stuff about it on the internet"

    Yes Studional/Rodinal Special.

I'm not sure if they use it for pushing but I know they use it for most of their normal developments.

yep, it's rodinal - i discovered this after i questioned why my neopan was coming out so contrasty. apparently that's what you expect with neopan and rodinal.

Rodinal and Rodinal Special are completely different developers.

that's very likely what i was told, but my memory might not have held on to the extra detail. it was about 5 years ago.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,713 ✭✭✭DaireQuinlan

yeah different dev. I wouldn't be tempted to use Rodinal as a general purpose dev, though I've certainly souped enough rolls of Tri-x in it at a bewildering array of speeds (well, maybe about 3 :-D)

Just got 120 roll and 35mm E6 (slide) rolls back from Fuji on Abbey Street.

They look great. Ill try and scan some over the weekend. 8.50 per roll dev only is a bit steep but I guess they are the only ones who do it. They will post it to you for 3€ if you need.

Yeah I've always gotten sterling work from that place, E6 I can't dev myself so the rare roll I don't xpro goes in there. That's the place I get my C-41 chemicals aswell, you have to get them to order them in though.

    E6 I can't dev myself

    Why so Daire?

"can't dev myself" in that I've never bought the chems, that's pretty much it. I buy the C-41 chems but I've never really shot enough slide to justify buying the E6 chems as well. Though given the amount of E6 in my freezer at the moment (partly thanks to you :D) I might just order the E6 stuff as well the next time I'm in fujicare...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 851 ✭✭✭vintagecosmos

I think an e6 chemical kit is about €40-50 for 10 rolls which is quite dear...

Daire, why do you get them to order in chemicals? I thought prices are roughly the same all around Dublin or do they have smth special ?:)

I sell the Tetenal E6 kit for €42.10 which will do 12 rolls 35mm film which works out at €3.51 each.

Whats the shelf life of the chemicals out of curiosity? ive only shot 2 rolls of slide in the past year...

They do a particular pack of chemicals that I'm familiar with and that has a pretty good rep, the Fuji Hunt 5L press kit. It's a separate bleach/fix kit. I generally do it up 500ml at a time, using protectan on the unused concentrates, and use the 500ml for a few films before tossing it, so I get anything up to 30 or 40 rolls of film out of the one box before I get another. It was €40 or €45 the last time I got it, can't remember exactly, so it's good value. The Fuji Hunt E6 kit is a couple of quid more IIRC.

i still have to get that tungsten stuff to you.

gunns looked into processing E6, afaik, but didn't go ahead with it due to lack of space.

I heard today though that someone new is starting to develop E6. Ill ask Gunn for details...
