i'm thinking of getting a new iphone when they release the new ones in the summer hopefully. it is not only cheaper up north, but they are also unlocking them, I know they are probably going to start unlocking them here, but there is still the price difference. Can i walk into an o2 shop up north, buy the iphone, top up by £15 (thats how they charge for the unlock) and request them to unlock it? do they need a uk address or can i register the phone to an irish address?

Are you sure they are cheaper up North?

Before Christmas, I was going to get one, but with the currency conversion, I was only saving myself around 10 Euro.

but for an extra £35 sterling you can get the UK iPhone factory unlocked by O2. not having to have your phone jailbroken to be unlocked is well worth that in my opinion.

but sure by then you have an unlock, but no jailbreak, get a 3.1.2 while you can !

Any guesses will they still allow people to unlock like this when the new iPhone comes out?

Turns out it's not that much cheaper. But my main question is still not answered and that is do o2 require a uk address to buy a PAYG iPhone?

Not sure about unlocking down here, I would assume so, and also hope so!!

not sure how that figure breaks down, but I do know you have to pay £15 to have it unlocked, well worth it IMO. Still no answer about the UK address!?

Agree it's 15, don't know where 35 came into it, unless you have to buy airtime too.. Have no idea if or why you would need a UK address, since the phone is unlocked by itunes when O2 pass on the code.

Probably cheaper to fly to Turin, buy it there, unlocked out of the box and get a decent meal.

    Food in the north suxx.

did something similar in 2008. Flew to geneva with the ol' man, drove around switzerland for a few days, hit Aosta in Italy for a few hours and picked up an unlocked 3G! However the budget doesn't allow for a flight to italy, and it's the same price as here and up north, much quicker too!

The reason I ask about a UK address is not for the unlocking, but for the actual purchase of the phone

Cheers man. Won't be doing it until they release a new model, and hopefully they'll have brought in unlocking down here by then! but was just looking into it incase. Really appreciate the offer, and may well take you up on it if needs be.

AFAIK you have to buy £20 credit with the £15 unlock fee, it's where my figure of £35 came from.

has anyone gone up the north and bought an iphone, then come back down south and unlocked it?
