Hi everyone, need a bit of advice please...Has anyone gone through the process of claiming vat back on a 3 month old car purchased in the uk? I know car has to be over 6 months old or over 6000 kms to avoid paying irish vat.Do you pay 21% irish vat on the iuk nvoice priceexcluding the irish vrt,or do you pay vat on the total of the uk invoice price AND the vrt? Then can you claim back the uk vat at 15%? Anyone on here that went through the process,is it just hassle or is it straight forward? Many thanks!!:)

You do not pay the uk VAT if the car is less than 6 months old etc & are buying it for immediate export.
You then pay irish VAT in ireland @21% on the vatless uk invoice price.
You then pay vrt based on omsp that revenue will have. (this amounts to a percentage of the market value of the car)

I guess if you have paid the uk vat, it is possible to claim it back once you prove that vat has been paid in ireland but this is a complicated way of doing it.

Some UK dealers are insisting on VAT being paid but this is wrong. Its from VAT411 that much be filled out at the garage in uk for vat free export to eu

    From Uk Revenue:

Exporting your motor vehicle to another EU country from the UK

If you buy a new motor vehicle in the UK to take to somewhere else in the EU, you'll have to pay VAT on the vehicle in the other country when you arrive there. You won't have to pay UK VAT when you buy the car if you do all three of these things:

    * you or your authorised driver personally take delivery of the new vehicle in the UK
    * you export it within two months of its supply to you
    * you and your supplier complete and sign form VAT 411 and send it to the address on the form

Cars less than 6 months old/6000 km (or miles- not sure) are regarded as new vehicles

shouldn't it be that you pay VAT in the UK and then just VRT in Ireland seeing as your dealing within the EU?

Nope. Irish revenue will make you pay VAT if the car is under 6 months &/or under the mileage limit.
