Apparantly a "Special!!" Dont really trust HN they never seem to divulge the specs, even for TV's in store. Find Currys much better, but how-and-ever.

Heard an advertisment for this on the radio today. Anyone have an idea of the spec?

Mmm Harvey Norman good value but doesn't mention any spec, think this is the one.......

    cardboard-laptop.jpg

Just noticed there is also a free mobile with it, amazing how does he do it

:D That's about right for HN.
If they keep losing as much money as they are currently, it's only a matter of time before they pull out of Ireland.

    It's the Acer Aspire 4810.

Speaking of Acers those new gemstone HD 18'' range look rather nice. Harvey had them from €700 which actually seemed quite respectable considering there spec. ;)

another offer shown in the new tv ad.

Caught the tail end, which mentioned Laptop with 4GB Ram, 320 GB HDD for €449.
don't know what the make/model is

Surely this can't be a bad deal??

I've never dealt with Harvey's myself before though.

Do not buy an Acer laptop!!! (Especially the extremely tempermental gemstone blue range) Faulty from the get-go, "repaired" three times, finally replaced when a favour was called in/solicitor involvement threatened.

I have just come to the end of a rather lengthy and extremely frustrating episode with their hapless support. See This thread.

I will never be buying an Acer again either.

I have an extremely faulty aspire laptop that cost me €1100, and has never worked properly. A completely faulty video card/screen is the main prob. It is currently in with AE for repair, having failed 3 weeks after being returned from a first time month-long stay with AE back in November.

AE won't field calls regarding Acer warranty jobs; that's up to Acer themselves, and they are dismal at it. I don't even know where I am going to stand regarding repair warranty if it fails again. My actual product warranty expires next month, so I could be left in the shit when it invariably fails again in the next couple of months.

Anyone know if your warranty is extended following repairs?

My saga is still ongoing aswell. My (very expensive, but extremely faulty) Aspire laptop is back with Acer/A&E in Banbridge for the third time, having been away from me for over 2 months in total, and being returned broken last week after a month's absence.

This company is an absolute joke.

I know of three other people currently wrangling with a Cork support office not 3 months after buying Acer laptops.

lol, this wishful thinking on your part or have there been rumblings of that nature, coz of the gloomy economic cimate?

called a few stores and none of em seem to have heard of this new offer?

We got a HP pavillion lappy with them though back in 04 and it's still going strong. Really old spec wise now, obviously, but useful nonetheless.

Tis probably a good offer for bricks n mortar (if legit) although if you had a business account, this may well be better

Once you claim the vat back, it works out slightly cheaper than the Harvey offer.

ah, but the gemstones are just so pretty and blue :D

Cheers for the headzup though. I was actually leaning more toward the Dell Inspiron myself.

They're ok I suppose. The "cinedash" controls on the left side are finicky and awful, don't work accurately at all. The Acer pre-install software is weird and causes stuff to stop workin if you turn it off on startup through run:msconfig.

I re-read what I wrote there: The 3 people I know who have Acer's actually have them for about 3/6/6 months repsectively. Still a fairly shockin fail-rate though.

Have one of these for well over a year, do some pretty heavy work on it at times and no problems, good machine and reasonable too. Never had to deal with tech support though. Had a HP before that and I certainly won't be buying another one of those, disasterous purchase broke down twice under warranty and my replacement died a month after warranty was out

i have a 18.4" acer aspire gemstone blue 8920g laptop, prob around 16 months old

the biggest prob has occured recently, the power port has this ticking noise, and the power cord in it can be tempremental if moved the laptop will shut down

the ticking noise is VERY annoying

its outta warrenty so i dunno what to do with it

You have my sympathy, they're awfully unreliable. I had that power port problem the last time it came back from repair with A&E in Banbridge too(Acer's outsourced repair centre in Ireland). That was because they swapped out the port for a cheaper replacement when nothing was wrong with it and the jack wouldn't stay in. They did this with about 5 or 6 parts including screen/fan (They took the crystal clear perfectly operable screen out and swapped in a cheap yellow-tinge one, as well as making the fan sound like a 85 Ford Cortina goin up a hill).

My laptop was a stock part piece of crap (if it only worked) by the time they were finished.

Unfortunately not a lot u can do if out of warranty, although I wouldnt trust A&E repair again either, so go to a third party. Although personally I feel like you're on borrowed time once they gemstones start breaking, and you'll be dropping it back for somethin else in a few weeks. Cut your losses imo, I'm partially biased by an awful experience though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,036 ✭✭✭BArra

haha, sorry to hear of your troubles

cutting my losses leaves a hard lump to swallow considering this thing was around 1k euro when i bought it

i suppose ill struggle on till it dies, im down in cork so i dunno who would be competent to fix this down here without ****ing it up

note to self perhaps? always buy extended warrenty

Remember that there are a lot of good people employed at HN. I bought a netbook in their Drogheda store and found the staff v helpful.

I dont have a problem with their ads, they dont annoy me as much as the Dunnes Stores "difference is we're Irish" jingle or RTE's "RTE supporting the arts" jingles.

Had mine three months and it packed in...sent it back to Acer and they replaced the motherboard. Still not running like a new lappy should, wouldn't recommend them.

Harvey Norman is a ballbag, I wouldn't buy a newspaper from them.

And hello, long time lurker, first time poster :)

mind you, we have just had a big chat about ACERS in this thread so.....

Got the deal your talking about, for 499e 4GB RAM 320GB hardrive, windows 7, intel celeron dual core 2.2Ghz processor, seems pretty good to me, I bought cuz my roommate has an acer and has had no problems with it at all he has it 2years. I had a Dell Inspiron 6400 before and I will never buy a Dell laptop again, nothing but trouble with it, it blue screened after 6months, but i struggled on with it for 5 years, lost count of the amount of repairs and OS installs I did on it but, hopefully none of that this time.

If I put the latest icore proc and a celeron in two separate laptops in front of you, chances are extremely high you wouldn't be able to tell the everyday difference without having to run some kind of benchmark

Celeron processors are fine unless you are doing some 3D design, which, lets face it, most of us aren't, in fact we're all just browsing, facebooking, emailing, watching movies.. in fact the ULV Celeron will probably give you better battery life.. which is something you'll notice straight away

Couldnt have said it better myself, the fact is this is a fairly good spec laptop, from reasonable money, there isnt really much cheaper, with 4GB RAM working on an Intel Celeron Dual Core, is plenty fast. Im not a CAD freak, or a gamer, so im happy out! :D

That's the first time i've ever seen someone quoting from that website (especially about a "bargain"). They're normally VERY expensive, so i'm not sure what that says about HN. - The fact that they are similarly priced to them can't be good. OR are laptopsdirect getting better?

Its all relative, your gonna pay more for a new processor and if this does the job i need it for, which is basically FM!

fail to see how im being fickle, never shopped there, never appreciated their adverts, certainly never felt any loyalty to their stores/salespeople.

inconsiderate or selfish may better explain my comment however id be quite happy if a company who flog €80 hdmi cables to the less knowledgeable shopper was replaced with a local business who believe in customer care, the like of which HN probably put out of business in the first place

There no worse than any other brand, every make have a few bad ones, you could buy a top of the range Toshiba or Asus and it could pack in after a week.

I had a good luck round a few months back for my brother when he was gonna get one and their not rated that badly now at all.
