im thinking of joining in on a club spin

    only beginner pace though

i cycle with fran Oconnor from here, we do about 60km on a sunday around the likes of blessington, so we're thinking of joining in on one of these club spins

about what distance would they be doing? and whats the pace like?

and is it too late to join up now?

oh, we're in tallaght, so which clubs should i be looking at, taking into account we're not Stephen roche or Sean Kelly

Your main options would be Orwell, St Tiernan's or South Dublin Cycling Club. SDCC are actually based in Tallaght, but are more focused on racing as far as I know.

Orwell and Tiernan's both start spins around Dundrum, but both would often go through Tallaght. I know Tiernan's have a leisure group, but don't know more than that.

Lots of people on here are in Orwell, as am I. As a newcomer to the club, have to say I've found it very friendly. They have a very active touring section that has spins year round. Current 'beginner' spins are still running, and if you're cycling 60k already you'll be fine with them, think they do about 80-90k. It's still a good time of year to join as there's a few more months of organised spins, and as mentioned, they carry on throughout the year, there's a weekly mail-out detailing routes, etc.

The pace is about 22-25k an hr, dependent on terrain- but no-one gets left behind in the beginner groups.

I'd certainly encourage you to go on a few club spins and see how you like it.

around 50km or 80km, theres usually fast and long groups, and short and slower groups, and underage spins around 25-30km might do for beginners too. Sorrento are based out of Shankill I believe so they may be your closest.

Last sunday, a few people who didn't have their licence were turned away by the spins organisers (orwell) insurance purpose. Unless you join the club I think you won't be able to join the spins anymore now we're in march. I guess you can always inquire.

The beginner's spin speeds at my club (Orwell) are pretty gentle, low 20s, but I've only gone on one or two around the beginning of winter. Late in the year is the best time to join up as the group is starting to stretch out to hillier spins now around the 70 to 80km mark as people prepare for the W200.

However, there's nothing to stop you going out and trying a spin with your local club and if it's too much, going back in the autumn and starting from scratch with them.

that was only for people who'd been out several times before and hadn't signed up as far as i know, actual new people it didn't apply to..

how do we go about joining if there is a problem with tagging along for a day or two??.

Orwell along with most clubs encourage new riders to come along to a few spins before joining the club to see if they get on etc. There is no problem tagging along for a day or two! As suggested it is only if you are becoming a regular but not joining that it becomes an issue. If you have been out several times and are still coming one can only presume the rides suit you and it is time to join.

If you then want to join you just need to send in a membership form and cheque to the secretary, details on www.orwellwheelers.org.

As ever, I think it's an insurance issue - from what I recall, there's an exemption in the CI regulations that allows people to go out with a club once to try the club out, but on subsequent spins you have to be a member of the club to be covered. Obviously that's more or less unpoliceable but going out several times without joining is pushing it a bit, not to mention freeloading. In respect of the OP, there would be no problem in showing up to the Orwell spin any Sunday before the end of April.
