I'm having some trouble finding a decent pair of fashionable leather work shoes for a young man.

My main problem is that I'm a size 40 and the shoes that come in size 40 tend to be awful looking thing.

I'm wondering could anyone recommend a decent shop to buy some decent shoes! I spent 40 mins in BT this evening but they didn't have anything in 40 that was decent. I've been into numerous other shops but nothing really seems to interest me.

I should mention that I'm into my designer labels and have a budget of say €250 for a pair of decent shoes but might stretch a bit further it I really liked the shoes.

I've come across these or maybe these but I'm not 100% sure and certainly wouldn't buy them without trying them on...

    Any suggestions?

I really like the first pair, the brown. They're a nice shape and would look with great with blue jeans.

Hya Shane. Size 40 is a six -right?. I'm assuming you've tried in the size 7. Would that not give you enough confidence to order a pair online?
or, as I tend to do with clothes, I order something from the supplier, the cheapest thing they have just to see what the quality and fit is like before I scale up my online purchase.

As for the images you posted, pure shoe porn! :) I like the brown but I prefer the black shoe.

Have you tried Arnots for size 40 in a pair of Barkers, Churches or Loakes? If they have a small pair you could try them for size and then check the websites for a different style to what they carry in the shop.

My personal bugbear when getting shoes is not the size but the width. Shops never carry another width fittings but F or G and I need a H. Hence I end up buying shoes a size to large just to get a wider fitting. Hate that.

I advise to forget about trying to find shoes in Dublin (or Ireland) as the selection is usually tiny, lacking in sizes, widths and so on.

I use herringshoes in the UK, and they are absolutely excellent, arrive in 3 days, and they can get any stock for Churchs, Barkers, etc., etc., . Fitzpatrick's (maybe Fitzgerald's?) in the Royal Hibernian Way stock a small selection of Churchs, Barkers but TBH it's priced ~ 40% over what you can get in the main stores in London. I don't see the point in paying over the odds so much seeing as range and selection is so limited.

Boss make clothes, and IMO the shoes are pretty poorly made.

OK so Churchs are a bit more expensive (£300 and up), but they are handmade. Barker are also great, Grenson, etc.,.

    E.g., compare to these: http://www.herringshoes.co.uk/product-info.php?selectedColourID=142&brandID=4&catID=6&shoeID=150&selectedSizeID=0&selectedFitID=0

If you don't fancy spending so much, then any of the Barkers at around £150-200 will be a better shoe by far than the Boss ones - I used to go for them occasionally but the quality is incomparable to "proper" shoe makers.

Your buying Boss shoes for the name, take Pete4779's advice and buy a proper pair.

HerringShoes don't do John Lobb. :( For a fleeting moment there I thought I was about to buy my first ever pair.

OK, now back to my longterm hunt for a nice pair of spectators.
