don't do your test in a suped up car

Dont dress too cool, act mature, or as mature as you can. Look nervous too.

I know a guy at the time 17, who was an excellent (as in competent) driver driving since he was 6 on a tractor, but did his first test in a car with dark windows and prob acted a bit 'too cool for school' and failed,

In the next test, he did the test in someone elses normal looking car - passed no bother.

My driving instructor told me I should take that herbal stuff (plant extract- used it before an exam once - it just made me feel sick) cant think of name before the test cause I'm very nervous, I'm fine driving on my own, but with someone watching me - I turn into a different person - so Im looking for tips on that myself.

Best of luck with the test.

I'm not too familar with the route, I did one in I think Raheny once - absolute disaster, but from what I've heard as routes go, Churchtown isn't too bad, roads tend to be wide in that area.

TBH, I've done my test on quite a number of occasions at this stage - Things I usually fall down are are Gears and clutch, make sure you have good control of these, taking right turns, reverse around the corner is always a disaster and reaction to hazards.

Seriously if you can get this moved to the drivers and driving (Mods please help) foram or do a search someone prob has the routes or maps of them on there somewhere, I saw one for tallaght done on google earth there recent- excellent. You'll get great tips too.

    wat ya mean hazards ???

    wat ya mean hazards ???

    examples might be,

cars parked on both sides - van pulls out in front of you - reaction to the unexpected I suppose.

Child/animal running the road in front of you.

Car in front brakes all of a sudden.

If you look at the rules of the road book - on Page 209 is the form they mark you on. the book is on pdf on www.rsa.ie, search around

Have a look through the list maybe have a list of questions for your driving instructor for your pre-test. Pre-test will be great if you haven't done a driving test before.

To be perfectly honest the tester couldnt care less if you acted too cool for school or turned up in an Evo lancer with the biggest wing ever on the back. He only cares if you can drive.

If you really wanna pass the test first time find an RSA Approved Driving Instructor in your area and take lessons. Practice the hell out of the route and surrounding area. Infomation is key here. If there is something you dont understand or dont know then ask. No matter how small or silly it might seem.

Ive been a driving instructor for a long time now and there is nothing worse than a nervious pupil turning up with no training the day before there test looking for help. Start now and dont stop til the day of your test. One thing people should take on-board before sitting the test. Instructors will show you how to drive correctly. This is everyday for the rest of your life, not just the test. When you are doing something with your instructor that doesnt make sence then ask why you do it.

As for the car your in. I had a guy 2 years ago do his test in a Porsche 911 Carerra 4. Fab car to drive and a really eye pleaser but he failed on observation turning right. The car you drivew doesnt factor unless its automatic.

Get there early to get a parking space. With that super value there and a lot of OAPs in the area it can be a nightmare to get a parking spot. The famous hillstart for that route is the one at the start of woodside drive, off the braemor road into the castle golf club. Remember the really sharp bend in the road as you come to the castle golf club; get down to second gear to take it. Also if he brings you up Whitebarn road to the juction with nutgrove avenue be careful not to enter the buslane as you turn right; and be careful not to enter if you can't clear the yellow box in front of the fire station after the turn.

The three cul-de-sacs on Beech Lawn off the Barton road are the usual places where they get you to do the reverse maneuver. They might bring you up Meadow Grove after the reverse; this is a very narrow road with cars parked all along the left lane. If a cars approaches while you are driving along pull in half a car length into a gap to let them pass; remember to signal and observe before pulling out again!

There are loads of stops signs in these estates so remember to come to a complete stop when you reach the line. Watch your progress on these estate roads: you still need to be reaching 45-50kph or you will be marked. Remember to get a few lessons on the route with your ADI. Good luck you will be fine!

did my test in churchtown today, failed, failed in tallaght a few weeks ago too.
did a pre test and my instructor seemed to think id pass, he was a good instructor and i got rid of the faults i had in tallaght. but then i picked up a new one during the test, stopping when turning right and checking too much.
personally i think he was way too hard on me , got hardly any faults other than this.
hillstart is the usual one beside woodside, did the reverse in that mountainview estate behind nutgrove, and the turn in there too.
out of the carpark turn left, then left again, straight down to where shell used to be and turned right at the traffic lights to mount carmel hospital , then turn left as if going up to rathgar but turned left onto the lower dodder road and then follow the road around to the left and turn right up to hillside for the hillstart , turn left immediately after the hillstart, then right before you come to the end of that road, down to the end of that road turn left, straight down towards the test centre but take the right before it down towards churchtown church, take a left at the church , and then straight up, take a right at the triangle , straight up the road and take a right before the shops , down that road and turn right into mountainview where i did the reverse around the corner then back out thru some weird way!

Don't mind the 'suped up car' bollox, I did it in a modified car, nothing was said and I still passed. Just relax on the day, Churchtown is a nice place, I know it because I go to school there, just keep calm and observe and react to everything.
