bark mulch

    Hi everyone,

I will be working away from home for a prolonged period and want to cover up all the beds (wuite allot of them) in the back garden to keep them tidy and weed free.

I was going to put down a permeable weed barrier memebrane and an inch of decorative gravel over it, but my wife would prefer bark mulsh. Its quite a large area .... maybe 60 sq.m or more.

    Two questions if I may:
    (1) Do I need to put down the membrance if I go with the mulsh (I don't mind the odd weed popping through, so long as its not zero-to-meddow in a week.

    (2) Does anyone know how much this stuff costs, per square meter - or can you recommend anywhere to buy it in bulk - or do you know a rule of thumb for xx kg mulsh per sq.m or any such guide line? (I'm in Cork).

    Many thanks,

    Matt

Theres a place in Corr Na Mona in Galway that do a lorry load for around €680 as far as I can remember.

Buy it when the weather is dry, as they sell it by weight, not volume.

Yes, do put membrane down. I did a couple of flower beds last autumn, and even though it was a bit last minute and they need a bit of tidying and additional mulch, there are no weeds. I know it is early yet, but the garden looks better than it has in previous years.
I bought the mulch in a garden centre but i know you can buy it in bulk, but not sure where. County council? It needs to have been sterilized.

I found that Westland was the best value in the packed bales (Homebase) as it is very tightly packed.

One cubic metre of bark mulch should cover about 20-25 square metres and cost about €70.00. It's way cheaper than buying loads of 80 litre bags. The fine grade bark mulch is ideal for flower beds, he mini-chip better for trees, shrubs or paths. Personally I don't like membranes because after a while they get exposed and tattered and look even worse than weeds.

    Hi

I got some from Upton bark mulch last year, 6 cubic meters delivered for €240. I thing there's a place in Riverstick also.
